    Pros

They pay pretty well. They are pretty cutting edge technology wise. You'll have lots of chances to work on big projects with the newest stuff. Training/Professional development is good.

    Cons

Its a company with no real purpose. Every few months theres some new thing that we're "all about" and is going to make tons of money. Of course none of it ever works out. Its like the idea is throw things at the wall and see what sticks. Very old school dot-com feel. I honestly can't see myself here more than the immediate next year or two. Mostly because everything is so in flux all the time, and whatever the big thing thats going to explode and be our flagship deal changes so much. Who knows what this company will be doing by then?

    Advice to Management

You don't need any more damn layers of management.

    Pros

Some very talented developers to work with. Very interesting software development work. Overall highly motivated people who are generally easy to work with.

    Cons

HIgh Pressure with a lot of Accountability. Management is under a lot of pressure and pass that on to developers. Direction of goals change rapidly to meet the needs of the business.

    Advice to Management

Give software developers more lead in the direction of the products. Finer tune the balance between marketing and the realistics of releasing product Reduce the pressure on developers by hiring more and training new ones.

I worked at Demand Media as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

They pay in a timely, reliable manner. Unlike other content providers, they don't expect writers to earn a certain amount before providing a paycheck. If you're just beginning a career as a content writer, this is a decent place to start.

    Cons

They have very high standards for low pay. I'm talking about for the general pool of writers. There is a high income bracket for more experienced writers. The amount of available work is ebb and flow. There are times when the queue of available titles is very low or nonexistent.

    Advice to Management

Pay your writers what they're worth. Keep the flow of available titles consistent.

I worked at Demand Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great location; very smart people from the original crew; not a lot of tech co's in Santa Monica to choose from; still potential for big things

    Cons

product and direction of the company are in flux and concern that the best years of the company are behind them; constant attrition of top talent

    Advice to Management

Clear strategic direction and committing to what you state publicly and privately

    Pros

Nice location, free lunch on Fridays

    Cons

Managements/HR's open door policy is a smokescreen. There is very little room for growth.

I worked at Demand Media as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

-Pay. The pay was fair for the amount of work required -Interesting Work. While some of the article choices were boring, there were often fun and interesting choices to take on

    Cons

-Editors were not on the same page, causing confusion and frustration for the writers -If you're a slow writer, you'll barely make above minimum wage

    Advice to Management

Get editors on the same page. I have known many writers that have decided to no longer write for your company because of the inconsistent demands of the editors.

  10. The environment is friendly. You can tell it's still trying to build a foundation for its online properties.

Could do better in building their platform as an online media company.

I worked at Demand Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people who care about their employees as people.

    Cons

Opportunities seemed unnecessarily limited. Hard to sink your teeth into it when there are so many stakeholders. Didn't focus enough on developing people, although, there are good people in the org who will take you under their wing. Too many cracks to fall through, perhaps.

    Advice to Management

Align teams with strategic initiatives, deliver ownership and vision down the chain. All hands are nice, but disconnected from ground operations. Work on defragmenting some of the org chart/teams.
