Pros
* Flexible work hours
* Collegial work environment
* Dedicated employees
* Intellectually stimulating work
* Nice professional building, close to Caltrains, restaurants, shopping
Cons
* No more free food or snacks. Earlier posters mentioned that this was a plus, but this is no longer true, unless you like oatmeal, burritos, and ramen
* No understanding of engineering principles or good software design.
* Too many features squeezed into every release
* No use cases or requirements. Or if you do get them, they aren't finalized until very late into the release.
* Priorities are constantly changing because there is no long-term vision or planning. We are very reactive to customers' needs.
* Innovation and quality are not priorities because we are too busy trying to please the customer with short-term fixes versus building a long-term solution
* Non-technical leadership dictates how things should be done, even if the approach doesn't make sense
* Dissenting voices are silenced either through lay-offs or are frozen out until they leave. If you want to stay here long-term, learn to nod, smile, and say "yes" to everything.
Advice to Senior Management
* Hire someone with true technical leadership and respect his/her voice. Our management team are all non-technical, yet we are supposed to be a SaaS company. Our current software problems are a direct result of a general lack of respect for engineering.
* Realize band-aids aren't solutions. It is better to take an extra release to do something right. Is it really better to release a sub-par feature just to say we have it? We do this nearly every time, and we end up eventually ripping it out when the band-aid doesn't work.
* Learn to manage customer expectations and say "no" once in a while.
* Learn to tolerate dissension. It is easier to surround yourself with "yes" men, but you build a better organization when you have more viewpoints. People with different views should not be branded as "difficult" or "not getting it". They may have legitimate points, and want the company to succeed just as much as you do.
Pros
Some exceptional talent.
Free snacks and drinks
Onsite gym
There are some very smart engineers I work with that can get jobs anywhere else. Why they choose to stay employed here is a beyond my comprehension.
Cons
This company is experiencing brain drain. A lot of very talented people have left. Rewards goes to those that do not disagree with management's view of the future. If you wish to get ahead; agree with everything that is being said, do not voice your opinion, and make sure you are willing to work almost every day to meet your objectives.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees. If they are complaining, there's a reason. Be willing to listen to opinions of your employees. They know the inner workings of the product a lot better than you.
Pros
1) great coworkers
2) friendly people
3) free snacks and drink
Cons
1) clear lack of engineering direction or leadership
2) constant change of features priority
3) short sighted band-aid work to please customer instead of focusing on finding a real solution
4) lack of respect for engineering work since the company is run by a bunch of professional service consultant people
5) Lack of cross functional team coordination and cooperation.
6) Upper management has their favorite sons or daughter that will always get rewarded regardless of performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Fix all the cons...
Pros
Teammates are hard working and willing to help each other. Friendly atmosphere, managers respect employees and good work/life balance.
Cons
Technologies and infrastructure get changed frequently, too many new feature requirements, it's hard to maintain a high quality product. Projects are not so interesting if you are not into the retailer industry.
Advice to Senior Management
Better benefits for people with good working. Don't hire too many directors that don't do anything useful. Focus on the product and make it better instead of throwing a lot of new features without thoroughly thought of.
Pros
+ Good perks - free drinks, variety of snacks, free gyms
+ there are some great people to work with
+ flexible schedules
+ good environment if you like to explore retail business
Cons
Senior Management keeps changing their direction and keeps reorg once or twice every year leads to many confusions and frustrations.
Many disgruntled employees that work hard but see no real rewards.
Good managers either have left or being fired because of speaking up for their employees; morale is low. Now we left with managers that mostly care about their personal goals who talks about big things, but never accomplished any thing correctly before having another direction change
Communication is a big obstacle; product managers throw in feature last minutes with bad design; causes too many issues that are impossible to catch up; Cross teams rarely communicate, which causes many coding conflicts
time spent in meeting is a big issue. Most meetings will not stay focused because too many related issues. There are meetings that can be ended in less than 30 min, but actually lasts for more than an hour.
Keep changing technology and the infrastructure is still a big mess
Advice to Senior Management
+ Need more communication with employees
+ Don't keep hiring director that add no values to the operation
Pros
You can have easy life here as long as you always say "yes" to high level management in some team. No matter if you are doing the work right or not. Lots of techniques you can learn here, cause they always stay in evaluation period for different technologies and doing nothing to enhance the architecture.
Cons
Just imagine that the "agile" team with only daily standup meeting without planning and anything else. High level management never know what they are doing or what they need to do for bring the team to better achievement. Technology changes all the time without consistency or planning.
Advice to Senior Management
Please listen to the employees and give them some encouragement when they have good performance.
Pros
Unique company and technology with a leadership position in a growing space
Excellent team, many with several years of tenure
Small enough for everyone to make a differnce, yet publicly traded currency
Cons
Somewhat of a niche player in the SaaS industry
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing what you are doing
There's no such thing as overcommunication
