I have been working at Dematic full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working for Dematic has given my family and I everything we have needed. It hasn't always been easy, but it has been well worth it. It's like anything else - you get out what you put in.

    Cons

Being away from friends and family are definitely the hardest part of working for Dematic. A lot of employees think that the "uppers" don't care about them, but the fact is that the job has to get done. That's just part of it.

    Advice to Management

Worry more about the internal employees than the external employees. Dematic is a great company but it needs to be fixed from within.

I have been working at Dematic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work hard and you will be rewarded. Forty hours a week or fifty hours with ten hours of surfing is not working hard. High technology for material handling (automatic sortation, automatically guided vehicles, robots). Fast growth and many career advancement opportunities, but you will have to do your time in the project world. Benefits are better than most in this industry. Grand Rapids is a great city to raise a family. West Michigan is beautiful and affordable.

    Cons

Goals of executives are often based on a disconnected view of what is happening in the field. This leads to poor analysis and rapid change for the sake of reaching their goals. Stress levels can affect health during the peak season or caused by poor management decisions. "I know we screwed up, but you will need to make it work." is a commonly stated phase. European office has an inexplicable stranglehold on North American decisions.

    Advice to Management

Talk to the worker bees and get off your high horse. You are nothing without dedicated people. A survey is not the same as open dialog. Convince employees that you can take criticism and will act on it.

    Pros

Competitive salary, flexible working hours, and normally closed between Christmas and New Years.

    Cons

They are experiencing significant growing pains. There is a mentality that you are either a manager or a "doer", and company culture gets in the way of innovation.

    Advice to Management

Management isn't engaged with people that report to them, and middle management needs to get rid of under-performers.

    Pros

Decent benefits. A lot of tools. You will often feel the smartest person in the room.

    Cons

Short term vision. Top heavy. Senior management ask why they have to invest for software when you can download phone apps for $1.99. A lot of people don't care.

    Advice to Management

Trim senior management. Get new blood, not just for veneer.
