Former Employee - Editor in London, England (UK)

I worked at Dennis Publishing full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Good benefits, including season ticket loans, private healthcare, health checks, ride to work, reasonable pension, etc
    - Reasonable compensation
    - Some talented employees
    - I made some good friends there, many whom I still keep in touch with

    Cons

    - Politics and bureaucracy
    - Terrible systems
    - Poor employee morale
    - The company's online strategy was a complete mess
    - Heavily reliant on cash cows (magazines), and copying others' successes rather than trying to build their own
    - 'too many cooks' comes to mind and was my experience with any of the projects I worked on. It doesn't take 30 people (mostly managers) to design a logo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less bureaucracy would be a good thing - empower and listen to your employees and they will feel more valued.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Dennis Publishing as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Pros – Good opportunities, as organization lacks smart people that act strategically.
Great atmosphere & people, it's a pleasure to work there.

    Cons

Cons – everything is done on a budget so the end work looks cheap and mediocre.
Many people playing experts, while in fact their knowledge is below average.
Too much talking and directions from people clueless about the area of expertise that ends up with wrong decisions and slow progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sending Management on various short courses made managers feel they are now experts, while in fact they are not. Experts study subjects for years and have many years of practice, you can't become an expert in a week! Getting senior specialists freelancers to guide management for a few months every now and again would improve their skills leading to better decisions. Also if management stop making decisions against what experts say would improve the outcomes.

I have been working at Dennis Publishing full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

A relaxed atmosphere makes coming into work each morning a genuine pleasure, and with minimal office politics you can feel sure it's a meritocracy. There's also a real passion about the work everyone does.

    Cons

As a small-to-medium sized company it can sometimes feel that things are done on the cheap and without due consideration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people on the ground floor (not literally).
