I have been working at Denver Health and Hospital Authority full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Working in the SICU gave me skills that I never could have gotten anywhere else. I worked with some of the best nurses and doctors in the country, and I'm proud to have worked with them.

    Cons

As in most businesses in the country, there is often head-butting between staff and management, as their focuses are different. Staff advocates for the patients and their families, while management is looking at the bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember what it was like to work in the positions you now manage. The problems you noted as a "worker" are still there, and you can now do something about them.

I worked at Denver Health and Hospital Authority full-time for less than a year

    Pros

This position was a perfect fit for me, it was a contract temporary position.

    Cons

It turned out that the Manager had someone hired for the position before I started working temporary.

I have been working at Denver Health and Hospital Authority full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great people and benefits. This hospital is rapidly changing. The hospital has applied for magnet status and there are multiple opportunities to flourish and advance in the nursing profession.

    Cons

The hospital is a safety net facility and as such, seems to have consistent and regular financial problems. Even as a nurse, job security can be a worry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nursing management is excellent. However, the focus on lean process improvement has been overdone.

I have been working at Denver Health and Hospital Authority full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent mission. Employees are great to work with and believe in mission (department specific). Pay is decent, for a true non-profit hospital serving the underserved. Benefits are excellent. Great location - public transport and trails available.

    Cons

Slightly under-resourced. Certain departments need training. Systems are inefficient. The IT department needs work. Professional development budgets slim and very little offered in terms of on-sight professional development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Denver Health could be so much more LEAN if more lean systems were put in place. Too many arbitrary systems with outdated technology. The place would save $$$$ if it had a competent IT department / infrastructure.
