Prosexcellent benefits and can get away with doing very little for alot of salary

ConsIf you are a hard worker wanting rewards and promotion it is a poor employer

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to look at outside private sector management and get tough with staff who do not pull their weight (50%)

Former Employee – worked at Department for Work And Pensions

ProsFlexi time and decent holidays, reasonable pay

ConsLine managers are unable to deal with problems, bullying gets swept under the carpet, lazy workers are never confronted over their lack of work meaning everyone else has to take up their slack, ridiculous policies regarding how to set out your desk - sorry but I will put my stapler and phone where I want it not where some idiot civil servant tells me its most productive.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being so 'PC' about everything - if someone is being bullied do not pander to the bully so you dont hurt their feelings.

ProsWorkforce consists of highly motivated and intelligent people, teeming with ideas. Enjoyable working lifestyle and opportunities to contribute to work which may have wide impact on society.

ConsOften too relaxed and many lack much drive on a day to day basis. Lack of accountability and performance management

Advice to Senior ManagementGood management, tasks well delegated both within groups and smaller teams within. Greater transparency and cooperation between teams would not go amiss however

ProsOnly 36 hours a week.
Lots of opportunities to train (around 2-3 weeks worth a year and seminars every other week).
Flexible working i.e. I work 9 days a fortnight.
There is very generous parental leave.
Stress free!

ConsPay is OK at first but with little growth or bonus.
Some bad managers.
Not good for ambitious young professionals; much more suitable for a person with commitments.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive ambitious people a challenge and reduce the hierarchy.

ProsBig department, with lots of opportunities to do different things right across the PSG spectrum, particularly heavy on delivery. Good work life balance, mostly, and a very well developed Management and Leadership development program,

ConsLong hours tend to be unrewarded when they happen (but flipside is flexi, 6 weeks annual leave, variety of staff incentives), some areas of the business are incredibly hierarchical and ageist (need to 'serve your time')

Advice to Senior ManagementNot much really - lose the focus on rigidity and making sure everyone's doing the same thing at the same time, find a way to exploit the long tail from an organisation of 120,000 people.

ProsSafe place to work when in recession. People to work with are great.

Cons90% of the time its only a very short contract which will put people off. If you work hard they tend to keep you on. But usually only on longer temp contracts.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood team overall, they are really good with their staff.
