I had an exceptional experience working for the DOC due to a great staff and office efficiency.

I worked at Department of Commerce

    Pros

The managers are really helpful and always explain your projects in detail, which helps prevent endless back-and-forth communication.

    Cons

It is very difficult for me to come up with a negative aspect of time spent with the department of commerce. They were very helpful but maybe could be a bit more expedient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Better manage sub-departments' time management.

    Pros

Great support system! Management works with you and ensures you get what is needed within an appropriate time frame.

    Cons

You are usually sent to areas that are not welcoming to government officials knocking on their doors.

I worked at Department of Commerce as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Diverse array of tasks and progressively increasing responsibility. I was able to work on some of my own projects and left feeling like I had really contributed something.

    Cons

Tons of red tape, even for government work. Office politics and general political crap can get in the way of progress and also creates an environment where the wrong people get promoted.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Department of Commerce

    Pros

The pay is good. The Department provided extensive training that fully prepares you for the job requirements. Friendly and supportive co-workers and supervisors.

    Cons

Communication from the higher levels of management was lacking a lot. worked on a need to know basis that created frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate feedback to employees. if you are happy or unhappy then tell us so that it can be resolved in timely and efficient manner.

I worked at Department of Commerce as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    - wide variety of work servicing departments too small to have their own IT area
    - direct contact with end users
    - some in-house computer based training
    - my recommendations for improvements were always listened to and mostly implemented

    Cons

    - 3 rounds of staff cutbacks during an 8 month contract
    - no chance to go permanent
    - many staff were overworked
    - many of the systems were poorly documented, (but thats also a chance for improvement)

I have been working at Department of Commerce

    Pros

The experience varies so widely depending on the agency or department. In general there are a lot of smart people, and such a wide range of job functions that there is 'something for everyone'.

    Cons

The cliches about the bureaucracy are true. Ton of red tape, and, in spite of being quite busy, sometimes it is hard to see exactly what has been accomplished.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Making sure that competent people advance, while manager who are not good at their jobs do not continue to do damage within an agency is so important for both morale and mission effectiveness.

I have been working at Department of Commerce

    Pros

Many varied and interesting areas of work, with lots of different technologies.
Public Service rules protect pay levels and work / life balance.
Office locations and fit-outs are good.

    Cons

It is a bureaucracy, not as big as some but still a bureaucracy.
Little internal advancement is possible. No money for training courses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out and meet the staff at the coal face, javascript:none();and not just so you can have something for the weekly staff bulletin.
