    Variety of in-depth, interesting work

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsDOE was in the midst of disbursing 1705 loan guarantees during my internship there, and there was plenty of work to go around. Staff is extremely qualified and helpful.

ConsThere is a definite sense of "government bureaucracy" throughout the organization. People leave promptly at 5pm. I mean, at 5:05, offices can be completely dead. The lack of morale is frustrating.

Great place to work and make a difference.

    General Engineer (Former Employee)
    Golden, CO

ProsReasonably progressive. Good opportunities for advancement until higher levels are reached.

ConsOrganization is in a constant state of change. Highly subject to the political environment. At higher levels (GS-13 and above) there is little mobility or opportunity for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to work on human capital management, including a fair and balance performance appraisal and bonus system. Avoid situations where the employees and managers are physically separated in different geographic areas.

Overall effective and efficient - employees generally satisfied

    Human Resources Specialist (Former Employee)
    Germantown, MD

ProsMost supervisors were very supportive of teleworking and work/life balance. I felt appreciated in my position and felt that NNSA specifically a semi-autonomous agency within the Department of Energy was a great organization to work for.

ConsSenior management was not always supportive of ideas from lower level management or employees. Resources were always an issue/concern as they are in most federal agencies.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo DOE management, try to collaborate more with other entities such as NNSA, Office of Science, etc. Power in numbers. Efficient and effective processes throughout the agency and across other entities would be beneficial to all.

Good overall experience, but frustrated by bureaucracy and aloof leadership.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsTo interact with so many smart scientists and engineers and economists under one roof is a pretty great experience.

ConsDifficult bureaucracy to navigate. High variance of staff quality: some are terrific and genuinely care about what they do; others seem to just punch the clock.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is difficult to integrate schedule C with career staff but it has to be done to work effectively. ARPA-E has done a particularly good job at this.

    Highly meaningful work.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsMeaningful, important work. Great benefits and salary.

ConsBureaucracy. Many permanent employees make six-figures barely doing more than showing up. Other employees have 80 hour weeks making half that.
