    Pros

Fascinating work. Important once in a generation subject matter.

    Cons

Low progression. Poor diversity at senior levels.

    Advice to Management

Be less hierarchical and delegate responsibility. Sort out the diversity of senior management.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

I absolutely hated my time at DECC, mostly because of extremely weak HR. There wasnt really a job for me - I had six line managers in one year. Subject matter is at least not terrible.

    Cons

Too many to count - I despised it. On the plus side, it had a canteen (a poor one but better than nothing in winter) and the HR woman was eventually suspended, so at leas there is that.

    Pros

Decent pay package but pretty much has to be considering the hell that occurs there.

    Cons

EVERYTHING, poor management, poor it, poor equality, poor scope, glass ceilings

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Department of Energy & Climate Change full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The agenda is really interesting, topical and fast moving. The working hours are very flexible and reasonable, with some very busy times which are offset by quieter times. So you can achieve a good work life balance. On the whole, people are enthusiastic, bright and respectful.

    Cons

It is not very joined up so you can find your self repeating other peoples work. The office can be a bit slow and quiet times. And there is a lot of processes to follow which can be stifling. The senior management team are also not paid very competitively which is a dinincentive.

I have been working at Department of Energy & Climate Change full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent development, both analytic and personal. Fantastic work life balance. Good offices. Lots of direction from the Chief Economist. Quality of the analytical work in the department is excellent which you can learn a lot from. The department is very commercially focused and you can therefore larn a lot of commercial/technical skills to take elsewhere. Always the opportunity to take complex projects forward and lead teams of policy professionals.

    Cons

Some roles can be slow because of the nature of the role. ie working on a project that comes online in 40 years means the work going on today can be slower than usual.

    Advice to Management

More perks, in terms of performance benefit. But understoof why this doesnt happen (as its tax payer funded).

  7. Really interesting place to work, although suffers from too many inexperienced policy officers.

I worked at Department of Energy & Climate Change full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really interesting and diverse policy areas to work in. Friendly co-workers. Usual civil service benefits. Excellent line managers.

    Cons

Too many inexperienced colleagues, especially at the policy lead level. Policy formation often in flux and subject to last minute change. Awful building and canteen

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on building up individual knowledge and expertise. Focus more on long term strategic policy rather than short term media handling.
