I have been working at Detroit Diesel full-time

    Pros

Upward mobility is good. Management is very good, they do not micro manage. If you put in a lot of effort, it will show.

    Cons

Working with union employees. I never thought a grwon man would spend 20 minutes saying how it wasn't his job to do something that would take 2 minutes to do. You are always VERY busy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of the union.

It really is all about who you work with.

I have been working at Detroit Diesel full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits. 1st year employees (salaried non union) get 4 wks vacation, cheap employee lease of mercedes, 6% 401k match.

    Cons

Kind of cliquey. And they allow some terrible, terrible managers to stay on to retirement. In 10 yrs here, it's been extremely rare to meet one that is really sharp who also has great people skills. Some have one or the other and sadly, some have neither. A LOT of sexism too.

I have been working at Detroit Diesel as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Detroit Diesel treats their employees very well. A lot of PTO and also lets them rent out a mercedes for cheap!

    Cons

Can experience some slow days, but that is normal in any given company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give interns to managers who want them. You will only get out of the intern what the manager puts in.

I worked at Detroit Diesel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Open and enjoyable engineering department. Smart, clever people. Managers were some of the best I've ever worked with. They believe in their people and fight for them. They shielded us from upper management so that we could focus on what's important... Doing our job.

I learned a lot from DDC, much of the culture and values I took with me when I left, Even today I find that I treat my staff with the same fundamentals that I learned from my managers at DDC.

    Cons

When I worked there, there weren't many windows. I understand they have corrected that to some extent. Older building in general.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't change the what makes you great. Keep believing in your people, and listening to them.

I worked at Detroit Diesel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

the size of the company is of the right size. so it is relatively efficient when resolving problems, at least for engineering department. there is also lot of chances for tech exchange b/t Detroit Diesel and Daimler in Germany and Freightliner in Portland. Workload is reasonable and majority of people here is willing to help.

    Cons

no significant Cons in my opinion

I worked at Detroit Diesel full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

great benefits (tuition reimbursement), good pay, there is good opportunities to cross train, and they often take your opinions when you give suggestions.

    Cons

employees and even supervisors can be very catty, and for that reason I ended up disliking my job and felt I needed to move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a much stronger outlook on professionalism, positivity, work ethic, moral, and fairness for everyone working on the shop floor. People in the office generally seem happy, but the people on the floor often have unfair treatment to bicker about.
