Great place to work, very dedicated people

    Manager (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsDevelopment Gateway is a great place to work. The organization treats its employees like family. The people working there are very dedicated to their jobs and the work is really interesting. There is a lot of opportunity to travel. The work you do really does make the world a better place.

ConsBack in 2011-2013, there were a lot of mistakes made by former employees. The employees are long gone, but the errors they made are still haunt the company. Thankfully, Development Gateway has gotten past these mistakes and is growing again.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the friendly atmosphere and keep treating people like they are an important part of organization.

Challenging work and opportunities to lead projects
High degree of latitude within responsibilities (no micro-management)
    Excellent benefits
    Great organizational culture/office atmosphere
Non-hierarchical structure means that there is a lot of interaction between management and staff

ConsThe workload can be challenging at times and travel can occasionally be excessive
High degree of latitude sometimes is accompanied by unclear expectations from management

Exciting, challenging and rewarding place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsLots of opportunities for learning, creatively and international travel with supportive management. Open office layout. Lots of opportunities for connecting with others. Flexible work schedule (most times). A start up style culture.

ConsHeavy work load. Not the best place for people that aren't self-starters. Often poor communication between senior management and staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more to staff. Make it clearer to staff what the organization's strategy is. Sometimes feels like an aid agency.

The company is on a verge of collapse

    (Current Employee)

ProsGood for young people who like to be sent to developing countries for adding a line to their resume and do not expect a career at Development Gateway.

ConsThe company is basically dying. A series of mistakes by senior management lead to a bad financial situation. Many long-time employees have been fired, more will probably follow soon. Management is trying to act like nothing is happening but they are fooling only the kids they hired recently to bring costs down.

Advice to Senior ManagementResign while it's not too late. But then again it's probably too late.

International organization with a diverse staff, excellent benefits, offering great career path for young professionals

    (Current Employee)

ProsDevelopment Gateway is an organization that is in its best years yet. It offers young people great opportunities to get their "hands dirty" on interesting projects while also offering extensive experience in developing countries. The open work culture allows the staff to grow in their professional development. Senior management is extremely friendly, approachable and listen to staff concerns taking immediate action to rectify problems where possible. Over the past few years the environment has changed for the better with the organization moving forward in key areas that are relevant to today's technical challenges. If you are looking to learn and gain experience in the international development arena this is a great place to work.

ConsIn the past the organization was too "top heavy" with too many management staff. However, this is now changing with the organization cutting out the "fat" and staffing with a young dynamic staff while at the same time keeping an equal measure of "experienced" staff in place.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue down this road

Worst Management I have ever experienced

    Job Title (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

    Pros-Decent salary/benefits
    -Some interesting colleagues
    -Location was perfect--close to metro

ConsI have worked in 5 different organizations. None comes close to the disfunction I experienced at DG.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is one "manager" in particular that is sinking the entire ship.

Incompetent senior management, failed organizational structure, personal work performance is not rewarded

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsGood benefits, access to new technologies, working for public good, friendly atmosphere (when people are not stressed).

ConsPeople are under significant stress, several employees have been let go recently, there have been salary cuts. Utterly incompetent senior management doesn't control the situation.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management should be replaced with people who better understand what organization is doing and more successful at fund raising.

    stressful and not rewarding

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsGood benefits, great location, and good opportunity to work with donors

ConsOrganizational issues, highly bureaucratic and slow in pace, very old management and very few innovators, management doesn't control staff and it is easier to stay home or to leave job at 2pm every day. Success or failure don't determine any consequence. At Development Gateway who doesn't do anything all day long has more chances to live peacefully.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeave the space to the new generations and make it informal!

Allows for serious career growth, if you take advantage of opportunities

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsLately DG has undergone some big changes which should be transformational for the organization; it almost feels like a start up organization. We have very interesting coworkers from all over the world and with different backgrounds. Management truly invests time in staff tto make sure that they are happy with what they are doing and that they have the resources they need to do their jobs. There's a lot of room for growth for team members - but you have to be aware of what is going on and ask to do new things. There are also lots of opportunities for travel to some interesting places. Finally, it's a positive work environment (almost family-like) with good benefits.

ConsFor many reasons, there is less accountability for some team members than others, meaning that some members are not respectful of policies or simply do not contribute anything meaningful work wise. More often than not, nothing happens to these team members. Also, the speed with which senior management makes high-level organizational decisions can be excruciatingly slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to empower team members to manage their own projects and programs and support them to establish better accountability measures. Be more agile when it comes to decision making and trust managers and directors to make more decisions; remember the difficult decisions are often decisions that simply have to be made and that delaying that decision can be more harmful than helpful.

Committed staff, meaningful work, innovative directions

    (Current Employee)

ProsGreat opportunity for junior staff to gain practical, hands-on experience working with governments and donors at the cutting edge of open government and aid transparency. Major evolution in the last year towards greater internal accountability, improved management processes, and exciting new project innovations with game-changing potential in international development. Colleagues are in general a fun, dedicated, and international group. Not to mention an impressive cadre of young, new team members who bring creativity, enthusiasm and fresh ideas.

ConsIn the past, senior management decision-making was too slow, but process overhauls and changes to management in the last year have noticeably improved the pace and transparency of decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to invest in the next generation of team members, empower and hold accountable mid-level managers, and be wiling to focus on just a few areas where demand is the greatest.
