Rewarding place to work. Diageo values it's people and invests time in training/development of staff.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat work-life balance, superb training and development programs. Clarity of vision for strategy and growth plans.

ConsDecisions and actions made remotely (from London HQ) with little or no knowledge of the impact on the ground (country based/local market units). Some instances of poor middle managers in the ranks.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore autonomy for local market units

    Great employer

    Global Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsAmazing brands, strong marketing practices that value flair and creativity. Vibrant category.. Support female leadership

ConsAs with any big company, company politics can mean less autonomy for those not at the most snr levels... Big portfolio means if you are a smaller brand, not enough funds to grow... Slower to make decisions..

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower teams.. Champion creativity and the freedom to fail.. Inspire with positive leadership

    Great marketing company, little depth

    Consultant (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsGreat brands. Good people. Great industry - your customers want their customers to have a good time - what could be better? This is a good company for folk who want to learn who to market great brands. It is all about the global brands.

ConsConstant reorganisations. Focus on short-term profit. Senior executives take credit for performance - which really is the result of decades of investment in building powerful brands.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk your talk. Huge focus on "great place to work" and internal culture - and "valuing your people" but if the profit performance is not on track for (self-imposed) targets then senior management is happy to sacrifice people - and the executive then keeps their bonuses!

    Great employer

Marketing Manager, Corporate Relations Manager (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsVery strategic approach to all decision making
    Very well structured and organised
    Clear leadership
Given lots of responsibility & accountability
Presence all over the world so opportunity to travel
    Supportive of flexible working
Great company trips/outings to distilleries etc!

    ConsVery serious company atmosphere
Masculine 'boys club' culture in some departments
Limits on ability to use any personal creativity due to ever increasing uniformity of brand marketing plans (which is understandable given global nature of brands)

Advice to Senior ManagementI worked for Diageo from 2000 to 2009 so it is a while ago now. Overall my experiences working for Diageo were very positive. Downsides were i) a seemingly ever increasing lack of opportunity to be creative in my (marketing) role given the globalised approach, and ii) male dominated culture

Better for sales than for functions

    Human Resources Manager (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsDiageo is a great company to work for, the environment is friendly, with nice products, still competitive benefits (annual leave 28 days and also pensions plan is good). People are encouraged to stand up for themselves, they are open to all views.

ConsThe environment is friendly, sometimes too friendly, hence opportunities to step up the career ladder often only comes if you made the 'right' friends.
After the recent changes in the company it is also more apparent that anything apart from the roles that are bringing in the profit, they are cutting down. So lots of job cuts, especially by functions being moved to lower cost areas (outside of UK).
Being in a function role is not an advantage if you'd like to get your further education sponsored either, that's just something what they don't invest in.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecision making needs to be more consistent when it comes to rating employee performance, and based on facts more rather than overbalancing it to the how they achieved what they delivered on. Our values and performance ambitions are great, they need to be put into practise equally though. It seems like everyone has their own interpretation of some of the values, hence there are exceptions to the rules. There should be less ambiguity. There is nothing wrong with having some people with extraordinary skills so they can progress quicker, but these guidelines should also be clear and consistent.
Same applies for the budget, there is inconsistency around what really is a business need priority. Some can, some can't spend on business travel for example. We are still spending a lot on travel, for example with moving on to workday. But other parts of the company can (and have to) replace business travels with webexes or calls. Also, we are cutting back costs, but having the canteen area refurbished 2-3x a year. We may not be paying for it directly though, but maybe it's worth considering that there are plenty of changes, so maybe some stability would also be great.
Also, we all understand the challenges we face due to the economy, however even with the recent organisational review, there is still a bigger layer of management. We lose a lot of knowledge and expertise with most of the doers leaving, perhaps it would be worth to look for options that also sustain stability.

Great Company to work for, but top heavy with management

Shift Operator 7 Days (Current Employee)

ProsEmployment conditions, holidays, pension scheme, share save scheme, free shares bonus.

ConsContinually on call when you are rosta'd off, told when your holidays are when you are a 7 day open site.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the workforce at floor level. Too many decisions being made by people sitting in offices who have never done the job.

Great brands to work for... unstable career due to numerous restructures often every 2 years

Account Executive Field Sales (Former Employee)

    ProsBrands, values and the culture

ConsProgression is very slow if not part of graduate programme despite company stating progression is accessible

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognise the talent in the field instead of focusing on the graduate programme, there are plenty of talents in the pipeline if they are given the chance to get mentored

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
