Pros
Good environment, flexible hours, descent discount
Cons
Tough to advance beyond the store
Advice to Senior Management
Do a good job of getting out to the stores
Pros
Love working around the sports and outdoor equipment that I use. Employees work together well and have a good team feel in most cases. Good benefits packages. Store management for the most part seems to care about the hourly employees.
Cons
Lack of ability for career advancement. Takes to long to get promoted to manager and the amount of external hires for manager is very deflating for those aspiring to move. Payroll cutting takes place to much to the point that it affects the moral of all employees, stretches departments to thin and leaves full time employees with part time hours almost. If you make it to an hourly leadership position you are severely underpaid for the work that you do.
Advice to Senior Management
Take care of your hourly employees. Pay them what they deserve and don't cut hours so severely. It would definitely improve the morale of both store employees and store management. Get back to the focus on rewarding hardworking employees by promoting from within instead of looking outside for manager openings.
Pros
Fun place to work. You learn a lot about the products you're selling, and management is very capable of doing their job.
Cons
Hours can get a little crazy, and recovery takes a while during the holidays. Also, don't expect too many compliments from management.
Pros
Comraderie and the sales discount.
Cons
Benefits, pay, lack of leadership
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership needs to actually lead instead of trying to get each bonus for themselves they could actually share it with the employees that got it for them.
Pros
Great variety of products for every sport
Part time employees are treated the best
Good place to work for extra money
Good company discount on purchases
Cons
Lack of payroll is the constant excuse for cutting hours for full time employees
Some managers do not manage, they become friends with associates
Management out of touch with job requirements
Advice to Senior Management
Demonstrate respect to all employees, regardless of gender or age
Stop treating employees like they are a payroll liability, rather than an asset to customer satisfaction
Hire managers who actually know how to manage people
Stores will use up a lot of payroll to prepare a store for a corporate visit. When the visit is over, hours are cut.
Full time employees can't depend on having enough hours every week to make their living
Schedules are changed without notifying employees
Pros
Great work environment with great employees. Especially good if you love sports or any kind of outdoor activity. Good benefits.
Cons
Management is not always fair on how they promote people. A lot of do it this way now do it this way.
Advice to Senior Management
I think some things could be better if there was better communication and if there was more recognition for the work that you do.
Pros
Good work/life balance for students. Fun environment. Competent, and fun management at the store level.
Cons
Moderate pay. Limited raises. Tendency to hire too many people and low hours.
Advice to Senior Management
More corporate/ district recruiting from current employees.
Pros
There aren't many, the discount is decent.
Cons
Compensation isn't fair, upper management doesn't take documented serious feedback seriously. Schedules are on a needed basis, mistreatment is common place. lack of respect. Pretty much the worst place I have ever worked.
Advice to Senior Management
evaluate your leaders at all levels, compensate employees fairly. Try to run a company in which you actually know what's going on. Upper management needs to be more diverse.
Pros
To have access to the newest Nike and Under Armour gear as well as the newest golf equipment. An associate discount is nice, but it is still too small.
Cons
Management can be extremely rude and unpredictable. They don't pay well and the shifts and hours are unfavorable. There is also no stock purchase plan which is no good.
Advice to Senior Management
They need to stop being so stingy with their payroll and start hiring more staff to adequately support each department in the store. Too often the company is shorthanded and are customers are left waiting for too long.
Pros
Generally, an "OK" place to work. Clientele is a "want" type of customer vs. a "need" type of customer and is receptive to personal help which makes selling the product fun.
Cons
The company has changed a lot over the past 4 years going to a more cookie cutter type of philosophy vs allowing managers to be a merchant. Upper level management does not communicate with store management well and the sense of security and satisfaction with your work has somewhat gone away.
Advice to Senior Management
Change Management....the company is trying to change every facet of the operation. There is very little time to breathe and focus on retail, selling, and customer satisfaction...although that is what we preach every day. Overall assocaite satisfaction in the workplace has decreased dramatically through the years.
