Former Employee – worked at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Employee discount was OK. Most store employees were fun to work with. Store management was competent. Occasional special discounts from vendors were really good.
Cons – Employees at this company are not valued as being assets. Everyone is expendable regardless of performance. Corporate management dictates inane policies that store management must carry out. These policies often have no relation to sales and seem designed only to make corporate look good.
Last year mostly through my own initiative I increased sales in my department substantially. Much more than any other department. They showed no appreciation for my efforts. This year, even though sales in my department were still up from the previous year, they slashed payroll. Reducing staffing levels in a very busy department by over 30%. It became impossible to properly serve the customers. Then due to corporate policies, even though I had a sterling review the raise was a paltry .50 an hour. Thanks a bunch! BTW, since I left department sales are down considerably.
I had been considered for a management position. Management is a joke unless a person wants to have no life. Managers were required to work 10 hour shifts minimum, and 50 hours a week minimum. They often ended up working closer to 70-80 hour weeks with no extra pay for all those hours. No thanks.
Store management was pretty good, but they did play favorites and often overlooked deserving associates for promotions.
Advice to Senior Management – People in upper management need to spend some time actually working in the stores to see the effect of their atrocious policies. The corporate staff is completely out of touch with store level personnel - the very people they rely on to drive sales.

Current Employee – been working at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – The entire store changes with the seasons so you always stay busy. Great co-workers who keep the job fun. Great advancement opportunities with a rapidly expanding company.
Cons – Are just starting to develop their own identity rather than borrowing ideas from other corporations. This can lead to some growing pains.

Former Employee – worked at Dick's Sporting Goods part-time for less than a year
Pros – Lots of exercise from constantly walking and lifting materials. And you will be cross-trained in a lot of different areas the longer you stay.
Cons – Only minimum wage for having to micro manage 6 different areas of the store. Not much relief if you work in the Team Sports department and Bikes and Exercise.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire in people that actually know about sports

Pros – employee discount
Managers actually acknowledge you
Coworkers show interest in you
its been an awesome job so far for a part time job
Cons – hard to get hours if you only work in one department, so get cross trained
thats the only con I can think of
Advice to Senior Management – continue hiring hard working people and ask employees what they would like to see changed instead of having corporate make changes without understanding what happens from day to day

Current Employee – been working at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time for less than a year
Pros – The effort and resources used to on board external store managers is unbelievable. 6 weeks of intense immersion in either Chicago or Atlanta followed by 4 weeks of transition in their home market.
Cons – Some of the markets aren't prepared for the new managers and what they can bring to the company
Advice to Senior Management – Ensure that all store managers and above attend the training to be on the same page
