I have been working at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

decent discount, dress code is relaxed

    Cons

horrible training for new associates. not a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the slightest. Be prepared to left alone and left to fend for yourself by your second day without full training. Be prepared to be treated like a criminal and patted down daily.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be welcoming and supportive of new people. Take the time to train them before throwing them to the wolves. Your employees are not your children so don't treat them as such.

I worked at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

People and customers you work with. It is a great bond if you have the right core of people.

    Cons

If you are on the chopping block because of pay, age or both the Regional Vice President and District Manager contrive non real performance issues and performance you out the door. It is an opportunity for them to terminate you and get rid of tenured managers with acquired salary they deem not part of the company future. They use this tactic also when they want to eliminate age protected associates also over the age of 50.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cannot produce great customer service scores if all your management in all stores are disgruntled. Create a culture that people want to work in. Eliminate the overwhelming nature of work load. The undue pressures each day to beg for great survey scores from customers as the only measure of success is clearly misplaced.

I worked at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice benefits and flexible, reasonable scheduling.

    Cons

    Unpleasant work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the understanding that the corporate culture of this publicly traded company is very unlikely to change, look for all the intangible (free) things you can do to keep employees engaged, having fun, and excited to be there. Store level managers have a tough, tough gig. They really do. However, helping the staff to keep their chins up could help to provide a better work environment and slow the inevitable turnover that makes your life as a manager even tougher.
