    What a recent mess!

    Engineer (Former Employee)
    Minnetonka, MN

ProsGood benefits. Great co-workers. Used to be a great environment that may be capable of restoring

ConsThe organization is a rudderless ship with senior leadership at the helm. They have lost all focus on what made the organization successful. They are ridding the company of successful products and focusing on failing ones.

Advice to Senior ManagementRetire and/or re-invest in your core.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

The Greatness that Could Have Been

    Product Manager (Former Employee)
    Minnetonka, MN

ProsI worked at Digi for 15 years, nearly at every level of the organization. Digi is an organization that genuinely cares for its employees. There is excellent mentorship, work/life balance, and excellent global opportunities for those who want to seek them. Digi has made a series of conservative choices which have allowed it to enjoy relative stability in the turbulent high tech firm. It is a very self reliant organization.

Digi is a highly international company – if you want to spend time abroad and work in a medium sized company, this is the firm for you!

ConsDigi suffers from a number of cultural and strategic challenges. First and foremost is a lack of strategic clarity and communication of this strategy beyond a small group of executives. All the important decision making happens in 10 hours of continuous meetings between the same small group of individuals. The strategy must be shared internally (to create momentum) and externally (to create market interest). Digi is a firm that does not know how to communicate. If you want to make a difference, crack into the executive group and bust it open. Second, Digi sees itself as hamstrung to its shareholders. In order to grow and thrive (vs. merely survive) it should consider growing a ventures arm or spin-out some of its lower margin businesses in order to allow them to find Digi's next innovative set of products and customers.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate a spin out in a market that is more attractive to top talent on one of the US coasts.

    Digi is Floundering

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsThe industry is always changing
Plenty to do - the shifting priorities provide for lots of learning opportunities

ConsComplete lack of vision from top management
Execs so focused on investors that they have no idea what customers really need
Very rarely do they advance from within--better be content with the role you start with

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees
Quit pretending that you are cutting edge

    No clue

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsDecent PTO policy and most people other than managers are good to work with. Quite a variety of products developed.

ConsThe company seems to have no clue what they are doing, They want to do medical but invest nothing in getting the correct people to do the work, instead expect line level employees to know what to do with no experience or training.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop throwing darts at the board on what the company is doing.

Very pleasant yet the dysfunctional parts were quite apparent

    Engineer (Former Employee)
    Minnetonka, MN

ProsThe engineers there are top notch and really good at what they do. Always very willing to help and teach.

ConsManagement moved like peanut butter. There didn't seem to be much growth opportunities. The technology isn't exactly cutting edge.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake all your meetings and cut them in half. Spend more time with your team.

Better opportunity if you're at HQ and have a family.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCan be pro-family though not always open to extended vacations. If you catch senior management's eye good prospects until the next management change.

ConsNot working in HQ will keep employees sidelined.
Purchases companies to expand business line without willingness to gain an understanding of how the industry works, timelines for projects, product adherence and decisions, and can be impatient for success without sufficient time/presence in a marketplace.

Advice to Senior ManagementFully commit to an industry/marketplace before purchasing companies and dismantling the senior management and staff who don't tell you exactly what you want to hear- dissension can mean a different or better view, not just refusal to drink the punch.

    Unstability

    Inside Sales Representative (Former Employee)
    Minneapolis, MN

    ProsGood Team members
    Good performance incentives
    Good clients

ConsMost of the managers are understanding and eager and ready to help, however there is a specific leader in Sales who has no clear vision regarding his employees goals, keeps changing when the need arises. Need to be open to others ideas and focused rather than having countless meetings.

Advice to Senior ManagementMaintain an open door policy for employee grievances, rather than a single POC

Unable to see how broken their culture truly is

    Engineer (Former Employee)
    Minneapolis, MN

ProsPretty much everyone you work with is a nice person, helpful, easy to work with. No bad attitudes or difficult people, and many very smart people. Very good work-life balance, engineers often work from home and it's easy to leave early/arrive late for family issues, etc. The place pretty much clears out by 5:15pm and there aren't many people working weekends.

ConsGoogle for "Minnesota nice". No one will ever publicly disagree with you, and especially not with management - a very "yes-man" culture. No one speaks their mind in public. I was in one meeting with the VP of engineering, who told two managers to do such-and-such, and they fell over themselves agreeing with his decision and saying they'd get right on it. Then 5 minutes later during a break, one of the same managers leans over to me and asks "do you have any idea what the h*** he was talking about? He didn't make any sense at all."

And then the meetings -- nothing ever gets done. Meeting after meeting after meeting, and no one makes a decision or picks a course of action; it's always consensus-building, and if you can't come to a group consensus then you're really screwed because the meetings then go on forever. I can't tell you the times I've been at HQ and walked the halls and manager after manager is in meetings for almost the entire 8-hour day. It's amazing any real work gets done. And all the real decisions are made by management, with little input from ordinary workers. They are so stuck in their culture and they just don't realize it -- they go around thinking they have such a great culture and great processes and they have (at least as far as I could tell) no idea how truly broken their culture is. Perhaps it's a midwest thing, and I'm expecting a Silicon-Valley-style high tech culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease your corporate ability to introspect and be honest about what you do well and don't do well. Without this honesty with yourself and your employees, it is very difficult to improve.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat work environment and benefits. Employees had a sense of humor, fun.

Cons1. The training process could have been accelerated a bit, but the trainers thought slow was best due to experience.
    2. Laid off after one month of employment.

A good starting place for the new engineer

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Minneapolis, MN

ProsThere are plenty of opportunities to become a core member on new design projects.
The engineering resource pool is highly talented and a great learning resource.

ConsYou must be OK with a highly flexible schedule
You must be willing to wear a variety of hats: engineer, tester, salesman

Advice to Senior ManagementAll in all, keep up the good work; favoritism isn't shown in assignment of tasks and talent is fairly recognized and rewarded.
