Former Employee – worked at Digi International
Pros – There are plenty of opportunities to become a core member on new design projects.
The engineering resource pool is highly talented and a great learning resource.
Cons – You must be OK with a highly flexible schedule
You must be willing to wear a variety of hats: engineer, tester, salesman
Advice to Senior Management – All in all, keep up the good work; favoritism isn't shown in assignment of tasks and talent is fairly recognized and rewarded.

Former Employee – worked at Digi International full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good Team members
Good performance incentives
Good clients
Cons – Most of the managers are understanding and eager and ready to help, however there is a specific leader in Sales who has no clear vision regarding his employees goals, keeps changing when the need arises. Need to be open to others ideas and focused rather than having countless meetings.
Advice to Senior Management – Maintain an open door policy for employee grievances, rather than a single POC
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Former Employee – worked at Digi International full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – Pretty much everyone you work with is a nice person, helpful, easy to work with. No bad attitudes or difficult people, and many very smart people. Very good work-life balance, engineers often work from home and it's easy to leave early/arrive late for family issues, etc. The place pretty much clears out by 5:15pm and there aren't many people working weekends.
Cons – Google for "Minnesota nice". No one will ever publicly disagree with you, and especially not with management - a very "yes-man" culture. No one speaks their mind in public. I was in one meeting with the VP of engineering, who told two managers to do such-and-such, and they fell over themselves agreeing with his decision and saying they'd get right on it. Then 5 minutes later during a break, one of the same managers leans over to me and asks "do you have any idea what the h*** he was talking about? He didn't make any sense at all."
And then the meetings -- nothing ever gets done. Meeting after meeting after meeting, and no one makes a decision or picks a course of action; it's always consensus-building, and if you can't come to a group consensus then you're really screwed because the meetings then go on forever. I can't tell you the times I've been at HQ and walked the halls and manager after manager is in meetings for almost the entire 8-hour day. It's amazing any real work gets done. And all the real decisions are made by management, with little input from ordinary workers. They are so stuck in their culture and they just don't realize it -- they go around thinking they have such a great culture and great processes and they have (at least as far as I could tell) no idea how truly broken their culture is. Perhaps it's a midwest thing, and I'm expecting a Silicon-Valley-style high tech culture.
Advice to Senior Management – Increase your corporate ability to introspect and be honest about what you do well and don't do well. Without this honesty with yourself and your employees, it is very difficult to improve.

Former Employee – worked at Digi International full-time for less than a year
Pros – Great work environment and benefits. Employees had a sense of humor, fun.
Cons – 1. The training process could have been accelerated a bit, but the trainers thought slow was best due to experience.
2. Laid off after one month of employment.

Former Employee – worked at Digi International
Pros – Great people in all areas of the company and regions of the world.
Great deal of latitude and you can impact many areas of the business.
Could be positioned for growth...
Cons – The organization is going in to many directions for its own good and we focus on the short-term.
Very little career development from your manager (they are too busy) and no career development or training from the HR group (they are HR only in name).
Advice to Senior Management – Pick a few markets and do them well...we can't be all things to all people. If we don't we will just be a "nice little company" who makes widgets.

Current Employee – been working at Digi International
Pros – Company is very supportive of teamwork, of collaboration, while still recognizing unique skills and passions and giving people a chance to excel individually.
Cons – Strong corporate culture. There is a Digi way of doing things. It is sometimes necessary to find a sponsor to clear an obvious roadblock
Advice to Senior Management – Make sure everyone in a decisionmaking capacity has a time listening to customers goal. Implement more formal systems for information sharing across divisions not just up and down

Former Employee – worked at Digi International
Pros – Debt free financially well run second tier company. Works at finding niches it can dominate rather than taking on larger companies with greater resources.
Cons – Product line too broad for most salespeople to comprehend. As a result salespeople go where they can easily make their quota or in the latest hot technology they're focused on by their management.
Advice to Senior Management – More direct account interaction by Digi salespeople outside of North America to uncover strategic opportunities that distribution channels aren't likely to find.

Current Employee – been working at Digi International
Pros – Digi is a technically challenging casual work environment. You regularly get to work with new technologies and develop new products. All this without a micro manager looming over your shoulder. It is really the best of both worlds. Education and training is promoted from corporate. The benefits here are better than normal.
Cons – Like all fast paced engineering groups, project planning could be better. More often than not, the project starts with no specifications and documentation is put off until the very last minute. As always, this bites you in the butt. More time upfront would alleviate many of the problems during development.
Advice to Senior Management – Plan your projects better. Get specs up front and avoid feature creep. Documentation actually HELPs and is not entirely evil.
