    Pros

Strong product set to offer SMBs,, good fulfillment. Company always looking to improve client offerings.

I worked at Digital First Media full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are some good people who work there and the potential for interesting projects.

    Cons

Management is focused on politics and looking good to investors, rather than investing in people, products, and digital media strategies. There's no effort to look at the competition, no effort to develop strategic products, no effort to develop internal talent (or attract rock star outside talent) to improve the team quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop thinking about how you can sell off parts of the company. Think about how you can solidify and make the existing company strong.

I have been working at Digital First Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast-paced, dynamic environment. You can't help but be knowledgable about what is going on in the city and broader community. Editing staff has many decades of experience, while writers are youthful, energetic. Work is largely independent and can at times be creative.

    Cons

You are always asked to do more in the same amount of time and for the same pay. You don't get a lot of recognition when things go right, but definitely know when they go wrong. Not much room to move up, since most of staff is veteran and will probably retire in those positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't keep telling us how great the company is doing at increasing readership and keeping costs down and generating ad revenue and then say raises aren't possible.

I worked at Digital First Media full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Energetic staff at most properties looking to put in the time to do good work

    Cons

Staffs are cut left and right with no consideration on the impact of remaining workers left to get the paper out

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff your newsrooms, pay decent wages to reporters and editors

I worked at Digital First Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I work at a local paper, so I can't speak for the entire company. But here are my observations:
    - Dedicated local staff that really believes in what they do and wants to keep local journalism alive
    - New web sites and print design have modernized the products
    - Good place to learn and practice new media skills

    Cons

    - Overall business plan failing, hedge fund owner looking to sell properties and titles
    - Multiple rounds of layoffs cutting into and degrading the core editorial product
    - Pay low even for this business, plus high co-pay / contributions on health care plan; no raises for several years
    - Future very murky at the moment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Find new owners, maybe local, that can live with a smaller, but more sustainable profit margin
    - Market local titles better
    - Stop cutting core content staff and slow the turnover of digital sales staff
    - Find new sources of revenue such as full-service digital business marketing, specialty sites and web development

I worked at Digital First Media full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Worked with friendly people; as a first job out of college, allowed me to learn more about basic marketing, sales, and advertising

    Cons

Slow to adapt to new technologies; there was pressure to push a constant stream of advertising products on customers who didn't necessarily need it; the whole print newspaper industry is dying a slow death

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Invest in employees' professional development
