I worked at Digital First Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Worked with friendly people; as a first job out of college, allowed me to learn more about basic marketing, sales, and advertising

    Cons

Slow to adapt to new technologies; there was pressure to push a constant stream of advertising products on customers who didn't necessarily need it; the whole print newspaper industry is dying a slow death

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Invest in employees' professional development

I worked at Digital First Media full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Many smart, hard-working people trying to save an industry in decline.

    Cons

Minimal training or room for advancement. Morale very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more/all resources in growth areas (mobile/tablet) rather than on maintaining those in decline (print).

    Pros

Great coworkers, several offices in the area and its a good job fresh out of college to learn how to sale.

    Cons

Upper management had no clue how to move us forward. Training from people who didnt know the products just reading off a card.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire digital people to move company forward.

I have been working at Digital First Media full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Company trying very hard to stay on cutting edge of transition from print to digital but it has been a very slow process. I don't think the business model is quite on target with what the general public is wanting in the digital world as far as content and where the advertisers can capitalize their advertising dollars. The web sites are boring and uninviting and hard to navigate.

    Cons

Low pay, no raises for years , no matching funds on 401K. I have been in media over 27 years and if I had been smart should have bailed this industry 17 years ago. I have seen 3 bankruptcies , one IPO only to get d-listed from NYSE several years later. The stock options that were rewarded each year as opposed to pay increases became worthless pieces of paper. Too much uncertainty about the next few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in you employees with training and equipment - they are your biggest asset. Company is top heavy in management. Need more integration among the business units from content, circulation and advertising so all are on the same page and working toward a cohesive product for the digital age to keep are customer base engaged..

I worked at Digital First Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great location. Office is clean and the 10th floor has a great deck with a view downtown.

    Cons

The company is in free-fall now. They have little going for it and they know it. I would be shocked if they were still in business a year from now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just be honest with the employees. The smoke and mirrors nonsense has to stop. If the company is in danger (which it clearly is) then tell us and we can help out.

    Cons

Very uncertain future, rumors of sell off of various properties. Poor internal reporting systems to measure performance, way behind other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much expense cutting, hurting ability of organization to be client focused.

    Pros

DFM is a place of ideas and very talented employees at all levels. Every newsroom has people who are pushing to evolve quickly. Lots of great initiatives for getting newsroom employees excited about digital change, learning opportunities and experimentation at the national and cluster level.

    Cons

Senior management has proven they aren't actually committed to evolving their properties to be "digital first", as they've scaled back every good idea they've put into the field to cut costs.Technology is also a huge problem, too much attachment to old systems, bad CMSes and not enough investment in IT, development or product staffing to keep up with ideas,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually follow through on the talk and invest in digital skill-building at the national and local level.

I worked at Digital First Media full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There are some good people who work there and the potential for interesting projects.

    Cons

Management is focused on politics and looking good to investors, rather than investing in people, products, and digital media strategies. There's no effort to look at the competition, no effort to develop strategic products, no effort to develop internal talent (or attract rock star outside talent) to improve the team quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop thinking about how you can sell off parts of the company. Think about how you can solidify and make the existing company strong.
