Pros
awesome discount, variety of interesting people to work with, great merchandise, flexible schedule, training, fast pace, never the same day twice, nice customers.
Cons
employees who call off, markdowns, stressed out managers, over buying in some areas can make it really tough to merchandise goods, sales per hour goals make some associates overly competitive, hire better quality associates
Advice to Senior Management
discipline people who constantly call off, promote from within more often, corporate needs to communicate better and sooner with the stores, buyers need to be held more accountable
Pros
Quality products being sold. Opportunity to work as many hours as desired. ability to move into other positions after period of time.
Cons
Retail hours and working holidays. Not much communication from upper management. Waste of perfectly good merchandise on returns thats destroyed rather than donated.
Advice to Senior Management
Better communication and encouragement needs to come from upper management to employees. Tremendous opportunity for positive PR by donating returned goods rather than destroying returned goods.
Pros
upscale atmosphere, good employee discount, hire mostly full-time workers instead of part-time.
Cons
Extremely unrealistic quotas and sales goals, lots of negative feedback and NO positive feedback (even when you are the top performing employee in the entire store), unfriendly negative atmosphere/culture, very inflexible scheduling (even for retail)...get the schedule 1 month at a time and then they change and tweak it multiple times throughout each month. You are expected to get every customer's name and information and then call and pester them constantly. It is important to become their "best friend" and manipulate them to spend spend spend. Little or no say in where you are placed or promoted within the store and company. It is expected that you will wear a professional outfit (as in SUIT) every day and then do physical labor, crawling on your hands and knees, unloading freight trucks, getting on ladders, etc. Not worth it.
Advice to Senior Management
How can employees reach sales goals when there is no traffic in the store? The era of sales associates becoming close personal confidantes with customers has ended. Get with the program Dillard's.
Pros
Employee Discount, Diversity of employees.
Cons
No training, no explanation of benefits or policies up front, on feet all day long, no control over when you take a lunch, hold sales quotas over your head, high turnover.
Advice to Senior Management
Please consider more traning other than 1.5 hours on a register. There is much more to learn other than how to ring a transaction.
Pros
Nice atmosphere architecturally speeking. Fine clothing and ideas for fashion statements etc-Prestigous style job because of dress code requirements; working independently
Cons
sph system seems to have changed . But only in adding up the amount we are under (probably to remind us of the constant uphill difference to meet even while the local communities are at MAJOR national sporting event or homecomings of several high schools in the area.
The end of month sales are whats keeping the customers OUT during the rest of the month!!! You know that so why keep the daily "Sales Per Hour Goal" Knowing there are NO customers- Please don't act like you don't know, Mr Dillard, what I mean.
Advice to Senior Management
Rework your sph requirement and sales strategies- its NOT working "Hello"!! Really now you are allowing the sph to carry over if we havent met the goal. but it doesnt carry over if we do?
Pros
Very rude management , unattainable sales goals.
Cons
Good discount and you meet some really great people
Advice to Senior Management
Get a clue of proper management skills, understand that employees are not animals and need to be treated as such.
Pros
The job is very flexible.
Cons
Quota based for pay is too high
Advice to Senior Management
lower quota because sometimes it is imposssible to reach if 2 many people are in same department and store is not crowded.
Pros
The pay is higher than most retail jobs, my co-workers (not management) were friendly.
Cons
If you do not make a certain quota in 3-6 months you are fired.
--They are supposed to do reviews so you understand where you are standing with your sales quota, but don't always give the right information and you are misled.
If you are not by the register, other employees will make the sale and you will lose sales.
It doesn't matter how hard you work with stock or inventory...you will still lose your job if you don't make enough sales.
Sales Per Hour is based on when you start, so you may work with someone who has a lower Sales Per Hour quota than you but has more clients because they have been there for 10 years.
Management is disrespectful.
Advice to Senior Management
You should realize that your customers are going to your competitors because of the SPH quota. Employees are so worried about losing their jobs that they fight for the register (in front of customers)--this makes customers uncomfortable and would rather go elsewhere.
Pros
The product discount at Dillard's is wonderful. The benefits are average. Hourly employees are ultimately better paid than salary when you c
Cons
Hourly employees are ultimately better paid than salary when you calculate the hours worked, not to mention the verbal abuse that must be endured.
Advice to Senior Management
It would be nice if senior management would remember that we all work hard to contribute to the company success. Dillard's was once a fun place to work until the greedy took over.
Pros
It's VERY hard to think of much of anything that's good about working at Dillard's. The customers were wonderful to work with.
Cons
Management seems to favor the highest sellers at the expense of the newer employees. There is NO nurturing, very little training, and never a compliment from anyone. I am not a disgruntled ex-employee as I did very well there. The work environment is extremely stressful and I have even seen employees get physically and mentally ill because of it.
Advice to Senior Management
Know your employees are human beings and much more than things. Know that happy employees can make a business prosper.
