    I have been working at Dillard's part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    25% discounts for most items, 401k plan is ok, time off pretty flexible.

    Cons

    Quota system is good when you get customers to shop. No customers to sell too or apply for their credit card, you will pay dearly. Hard to get the consumer to get the Dillards credit card that's does not offer instant perks. Managers too young and inexperienced. Way too much turnover in management and sells staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Give customer instant 10% shopping pass when opening credit card. Make every employee including store management responsible for opening credit card. Properly train management. I've been with Dillards 7 years, have had 8 managers. Of the 8 managers only 2 was trained. The rest were useless, and none of them are still with the company. No way to move up in the company. Dillards want young, degrees, and inexperience.

    the interacting with fellow employees

    Cons

    you name it they don't follow up on anything upper mgmt tells u very sparse 401k match sales assoc get pay cut of goals not met and they continually pay new hires more than current employees no matter how long you have worked for them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    get real learn some people skills then send your mgrs to a class to learn how to speak and treat employees anyone that has worked here then leaves feels like they won lottery, i've never seen so many people so miserable and that's throughout the company, as long as u can sit and count your're $ to heck with your employees, local PD will not even work off duty here not one!

    Pros

    I think seeing the product before it hits the stores was the only cool thing about the job.

    Cons

    The Fort Worth buying office for Dillard's treats their employees terribly! Especially the online division! No sick time, no family time, you have set hours of 8:30-6, but are frowned upon if you don't come in early and stay late. They basically want you to live there and have no life. You would buy 6 months in advance for online, yet have to work black friday, christmas, and new years, with absolutely nothing to do. Your "buyers & managers" don't teach you anything to advance and get promoted. The employee turnover was rediculous. They were constantly rearranging departments. Always changing database and ordering software. Job roles were constantly changing. You basically had no idea what was going on or what to do. Complete and utter chaos!

    Pros

    Good working environment with good co-workers on the sales floor. Great opportunity to hone in management capabilities.

    Cons

    The computer systems and phones are outdated. You reach a plateau in your career and can't move forward. If you do want to move up the career ladder, they will move you without relocation compensation. There are a lot of politics involved, creating a toxic atmosphere. Sink or swim mentality.

    Better management training, upgrade to modern technology, offer better benefits to managers.

    Pros

    Pay is great. Holidays are nice due to overtime pay.

    Cons

    Managers seem to think they are in some bigwig position. Treat their employees as very inferior to them. Beware of accessories department, especially! Bullying by management is typical- especially in that department. Favoritism exists here. If you are selling and doing your job you will get accused of jogging sales. But if you don't make sales you will not have a job within 6 months. Only bonus is that they will have to pay out unemployment if they choose to fire you for sales!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get your head out of the clouds! Walking around the store as if all the employees are beneath you!! They aren't! As for the main manager, Mr Smith, he is awesome and is the only one in the store with true authority.

    Pros

    I have had the luck to work with wonderful co-workers and mangaement in my career. I have been awarded many promotions and raises over the years. Employee discount has always been a nice perk.

    Cons

    Work/life balance can be hard. Working in stores is especially hard but it is do-able.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clearer career paths would help turnover. Most poitions are under-paid. I think if bonuses and quarterly goals were instated emplyee moral would boost.

    ok for those fresh from undergrad/first job

    Cons

    promotion in the buying office, in my experience, was not based on performance but on how well one was liked.
    the pay is the lowest in the industry
    very poor management

    TRAIN new employees.
    Get an organized system of training and development that everyone is aware of and that is used company-wide.
