    Pros

I was a part of Shield (a break off company from DI) and I had a very good experience. The people at Shield and DI are both very supportive and kind. Both companies are forward thinking, and expanding the possibilities of what can be done within the industry. I learned a lot in my time there. Working in a growing company also means getting a vast variety of experience and learning quickly. At DI, the building is very modern and up-to-date, which makes for an exciting environment. Both Shield and DI have fun traditions (like Waffle Wednesday and Free Lunch Friday), that make working a bit more fun. :)

    Cons

If you care about design and innovation, you will love working at DI/Shield.

    Pros

Very friendly people who collaboratively produce outstanding work. Great environment with lots of activity and never a dull day. Management is very present and it is easy to work with other people from different backgrounds. Not much bad to say out this great company!

    Cons

With the amount of influx the company sees at times anyone new or in need of training may be put on the back burner...over time things are learned and picked up, but streamlining this process would aid the company as a whole seamlessly working machine.

    Advice to Management

DI is growing, which is an awesome thing, just make sure that there is enough HR and management staff to accommodate the needs of any and all new folks that join the team.

    Pros

    Very cool projects. good equipment.

    Cons

Bad mid level management. A lot of employees had more skill and value to the company than was recognized by the management, you could not rise in the ranks with out friends or relatives in management.

    Advice to Management

    Quit hiring relatives.

    Pros

Very nice shop people, quite talented, some are local/regional artists.

    Cons

Project managers don't have the authority to advocate for their project, are handed projects to manage that they did not sell or estimate. Zero contribution from project managers for Shop productivity yet are held accountable for cost performance. Shop lacks OSHA compliance. Very limited long-term vision. Typical midwestern, male-centric mentality.

    Advice to Management

Your management matrix is not working.

Small minded company with poor leadership and a confused sense of what company culture means.

    Pros

Great people on the shop floor - they don't get treated very well, but they're hard working people and do quality work.

    Cons

This is a company who's experiencing a lot of growing pains. Most of their senior leadership have been at the company since they graduated college -- they have no idea what its like to do anything but "DI" (read: small minded). They're painfully out of touch with some standards in the industry. No laptops for employees (can you imagine, a digital agency, going to a client meeting with a stack of papers? No laptop for real time editing or even basic NOTE taking!? High dependency on paper products), if you skip lunch and leave a little early you're told you're not committed, 3 days of vacation your first year - AFTER 90 days of employment. No maternity leave. Decision making left to people who have had less than 5 years of experience - none of which was in leadership or management. If its your first job out of college you have nothing to compare it to, so maybe it looks great (in the last month they went to open office seating -- Dont be fooled. This was a painful process and so far not everyone is thrilled with it.) but if you've got any experience working at an actually creative, innovative company, you will find this place torturous, even on its best day.

    Advice to Management

An open seating arrangement does not a company culture create. Rules are the enemy. Stop living by them. Get up to date with the world around you - laptops allow people to be mobile. Work from home. Work odd hours. You're not doing yourselves any favors with the atmosphere youve created and its going to take more than chips and guac to get all parts of the house interacting with each other.

    Pros

You get to work on great projects and work with good people also the climate controlled shop Is great to work in.

    Cons

I hear from almost every person that works there that you have to work for focus for almost a year before di will hire you full time with the company it feels like they are just using us. I work my butt off for them and I dont get any kind of recognition for it and I watch all the other focus employees waste time and doing personal projects for themselves on company time while I work like hell to gain a full time job with.DI.

    Advice to Management

Watch the people that work and give them a real job not a temp position and get rid of the ones that dont work.

    Pros

Employees are nice and fun to work with. Projects are always different and new. Plenty of work to stay busy. Large/well-known client base.

    Cons

Benefits are not the best. Lost the company 401k match a few years ago. Pay is decent, but could be more competitive for the industry.

    Advice to Management

Bring back the 401k match. As the company grows, create an advancement system for employees to receive raises/promotions that increase with their responsibility. Talent within the company will be retained longer if the employees don't feel like they have reached the highest rung quickly and have no where to go from there.

    Pros

Growth as a company seems to be booming. This brings more exciting and new projects to the table for everyone. Most aspects of this company are very enticing to young and new professionals starting/continuing their careers.

    Cons

Opportunities for growth within your department is limited. This is typical for most small companies. As the attitude and views change at DI from a small to large company, opportunities to increase your responsibility and position are not available (yet).

Benefits are not the best and a 401k match would be nice, like it used to be.

    Advice to Management

Create opportunities for growth within departments. An environment where employees know there is a chance to be rewarded with increased positions/pay as well as responsibilities may help the company retain good talent. When someone has been there a couple years and they begin to feel they have reached as far as they can, this is when you lose good, experienced employees trying to expand their careers.

    Pros

DI works on great projects for well known clients. You get to travel and see much of the US. DI recognizes hard work and provides opportunities for growth to individuals that apply themselves. They support their employees in times of hardship. DI has a handful of employee events every year that are really fun including a bbq competition and a pinewood derby race.

    Cons

Since the down turn in the economy DI has cut quite a few benefits to their employees, including 401k match, continuing education re-imbursement, and cost of living increases. Mileage and per diem are low compared to the industry standard. There are no clear bench marks for receiving a raise.

    Advice to Management

Return to the mindset of making this a destination for employees and make a push to be the top small business of the year as we once were considered. Have faith in the people you have hired.

    Pros

The workforce and company President are creative, dedicated, and produce awesome creations for their clients. The climate-controlled shop is clean, organized, and comfortable. DI tries to make a good impression to clients and vendors. The employees all get along well and respect each other. There are virtually no 'cliques' at DI.

    Cons

Notoriously cheap pay. Don't expect to make much whether you're in the shop or in the office. The CEO lacks vision and undermines results by flip-flopping on decisions and changing directions. As a result, DI's revenue growth over the years has been flat. The CEO's motto is, "Fail fast, fail cheap" instead of "Plan well and succeed". Always flits from idea to idea without planning.

    Advice to Management

When you hire talented people, allow them to achieve their potential. Reduce the number of meetings that detract from productivity. Be consistent and committed to success (quit expecting to fail fast).
