I have been working at Directory Publishing Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working with small to medium sized businesses is rewarding. The people at the telephone companies are great to work with, and always helpful and respectful.

    Cons

The pay standard is way below national levels for this type of sales. Not getting the proper tools to do your job on time seems to be a real problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to have a better understanding of how the paperwork and processes are successfully achieved. Being more supportive of the Sales Force is one of the most important factors of being a good sales manager. Get out in the field and work beside them on a daily basis. Knowledge of the canvas is key.

    Pros

Get to meet lots of new people and see parts of the country not visited before.

    Cons

Company is run like they are part of the CIA-doesn't want anyone in the company talking to anyone else in the company in ANY way. They stay up nights it seems to come up with ways to destroy their sales people. They are
blown hither and yon by whomever happens to be the voice in their ear that week. It's like high school but without as much maturity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice because they don't listen to any sane advise anyway.

    Pros

Helping telephone companies achieve a great directory. Knowing that was we were doing at that time was putting out a great product.

    Cons

Management & supervisors would rather be friends with a core group then a constructive team. Allowing some to blatantly break rules set up in handbook, while not looking at the double standard they were setting with others. HR Manager VERY condescending.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Send your management team to some how to deal with people classes.

    Pros

It's great working with the customers and the telephone companies. It's a fun product to sell. Support staff is great!

    Cons

Upper management changes policies as often as the wind blows without any consideration for the ultimate outcome. Upper management tries very hard to find ways to pay its employees less. When they see you succeeding in an existing market, they put you into markets with no existing accounts and demands you do nothing but sell new, which means a lot less income. They change policies to make it harder and harder for the reps to meet objectives and earn bonuses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to trust your employees. Don't change your policies every other week. Treat others with respect and treat them the way you would want to be treated.

I worked at DPS for over five years, worst treatment I have ever had, don't go to work here!

    Pros

The only good thing about working for DPS was the opportunity to help businesses succeed and helping them with their advertising programs to do so. The Telco contacts were always helpful and respectful and were great to work with.

    Cons

This company has gone downhill in a hurry! 6 Managers and 6 Pay Plan changes in 3 years 85% turnover in sales force in past two years! Company has no appreciation for sales team and completely disorganized, don't receive materials needed to do job on time, Lack of respect for sales team, policies change constantly, would not recommend to anyone to come aboard this sinking ship! Do not value employees, employees family time, employees values and morals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect and appreciate your sales team, these are the people that provide revenue for your business. Cut down on the paperwork load and listen to your employees, get employees the things they need to do their job successfully.

I worked at Directory Publishing Solutions (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working with the telephone companies and producing a good product

    Cons

Changing procedures on a whim and then changing them back again when they see that it does not work, only to try to make the same change again a few months later. Management will only enforce employee handbook policy to people outside of their friend zone. Management is patronizing, speaks & looks upon you as an inferior. They are too concerned with Tween culture rather then trying to run a business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow the policy and procedures you expect your direct reports to follow.

    Pros

No heavy lifting. Actual customer base and telcos are generally nice to work with. Expenses usually covered.

    Cons

Management is non existent. No sense of direction. Well there is but direction changes weekly. Pay plan changes with the weather.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get someone in charge with a good knowledge of the business and let them run it. Take a long vacation and check back semi annually.

I have been working at Directory Publishing Solutions

    Pros

Independence. Solid product and pricing structure. Freedom to set your own schedule. No micro-mangement (in most cases). Company genuinely wants to profide good service and good value to customers.

    Cons

Heavy paperwork load. Nonsensical decisions by upper management. Unpredictable changes in policy. No two-way exchange between sales and upper managemnt. Poor communication ot company goals to those in the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Don't make short-term decisions based on panic. Procede forward thoughtfully and carefully and actually listen to your sales people that are working out in the field--they might actually know something.
