Pros
5 Weeks of Paid time off
Work at home privilege in the Business Technology Business Unit
Cons
Not a lot of opportunities for career growth
Conservative culture
Advice to Senior Management
Take better care of your top performing employees
Pros
Discover paid well for what it was, and the benefits package was surprisingly comprehensive.
Cons
The company struggled to allow any employee creativity or individuality, no personal choice or chance to manage your own desk.
Advice to Senior Management
Drive accountability and choice-making down to the employee level. Empower your folks!
Pros
I liked the flexible work schedules & ability to trade shifts; insurance benefits were given from 1st day of employment; fairly generous attendance policy. Positions are posted internally & afford opportunity to learn different aspects of the business & company. I was employed there for 2 years - I had lost my previous job in property management due to change in ownership & I needed something close to home with immediate benefits. I was employed there when my husband passed away unexpectedly in April 2009. My supervisor, my trainer, department manager, and co-workers were so kind & supportive - they were wonderful to me at the worst possible time in my life. I can say they truly cared about me. I never felt otherwise during the entire time I worked there. Had I not been recruited by another property management company, I would still be employed there. Management also does alot to keep everyone motivated (contests, marketing themes, etc.)
Cons
cons - this is a call center & I was in customer service. I agree with another posting that DFS does grade you on all types of metrics - and the goals are always changing. Sales were a requirement - I didn't have a problem with
Advice to Senior Management
This is one of the best companies - I always felt very proud to be a team member at Discover. Constantly changing metrics was a little tough, but I know in business you have to be able to adapt to change.
Pros
Discover is a growing company, but still holds onto the small business culture. It is really nice to be able to function within your business unit while still making a relatively significant impact on the company's direction.
Cons
As in all corporate jobs, employees are given ample time to complete their required tasks. With no hard deadlines, meetings and presentations are frequently postponed or rescheduled.
Pros
Great paid time off benefits, good work-life balance, nice campus, on-site fitness center, not an evil company like some others in the industry.
Cons
No clear path for career progression, even though the company promotes "internal mobility". If one wants to advance in their current role or in their own department, it's anyone's guess as to how to do this aside from getting "in" with management. Bad employees aren't held accountable for their actions.
Advice to Senior Management
Hold employees to a higher standard and trim non-performers. Far too many people are just "coasting" along and are quite happy to do so as long as they get a middle of the road review at the end of the year. The work at home program, while convenient for some, is killing the morale of those employees actually dedicated to their work. Individuals that slack off also tend to be in the list of those that work from home regularly, and this often leaves the rest of us picking up the slack.
Pros
Good Work Life Balance and good location.
Cons
Crummy pay, crummy management, incompetent hiring practices and HR dept.
Advice to Senior Management
Fire everyone in HR and reexamine your rating practices.
Pros
25 PTOs
Average, but not bad pay
Beautiful facility, including gym, cafeterias, on-site nurse station, walk/run path throughout campus
Wireless access throughout the facility
Great people
Encourages internal transfers - quicker ways to get promoted if you find the right opportunity
Cons
Very political
Slow promotion - I was doing the job of higher level for about two years before I got promoted
Small raises (especially compared to exec. bonus..)
Your work/life balance would depend on the dept you work for
Advice to Senior Management
We say "do the right thing" but often times politics gets in the way and "the right thing" may get compromised. Also, many micro managers - trickle down from the top.
Pros
Great hours, pay, time off, and people
Cons
Inconsistent experience from department to department
Pros
It's a great place to learn. There are great opportunities for intercompany movement.
Cons
Compensation is less than average
Pros
Benefits, Vacation, bonuses, some good career opportunity advancements.
Cons
Collections is never a fun environment.
