    Pros

Discover has a very unique environment. They believe that if they treat their employees well then in turn we will treat the customers well, which in turn will make the company money. It has been working for them. They have a wide range of opportunities. You are able to move around very easily from team to team.

Discover has an open door policy. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help, it has a great culture.

    Cons

For the most part I have not seen many cons to working for Discover. The company is very meeting centered, so at times it makes your days/weeks very stressful but that is to be expected at most jobs.

    Pros

Work/life balance is great. 25 PTO days and great work from home options. Benefits are great. Friendly people, culture is very relaxed.

    Cons

If you start here, your salary is lower than someone who got hired externally. Political environment and middle management in IT is not trained in how to manage employees.

Competing department goals made it hard to get things done.

Former Employee - Marketing Manager in Riverwoods, IL

    Pros

Many talented people. Great work life balance and campus amenities.

    Cons

Politics and competing goals. Lack of ownership or direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Synch some shared goals, clearly assign ownership to get more harmony and cooperation between departments. Stop allowing the bulling to happen by a few in Senior management. Make them accountable and people won't leave.

    Pros

Benefits package is good, campus is great and the overall viability of the company is good.

    Cons

Middle management is weak and is not interested in developing most of the employees. If you're one of the 'chosen' few, you have a better opportunity. Career stagnation is rampant.

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Riverwoods, IL

    Pros

Lots of flexibility when it comes to work-life balance, people are nice. It's in growth mode right now so pretty good job security.

    Cons

Very "consensus-building." Read: political. Leadership is uninspired. No real direction or vision or purpose to the company. It feels like it just was spun out of Morgan Stanley and left with no reason to exist except to make money. Poor compensation compared to the competition. Process. It's like it's a small bank wanting to play big bank, so we get all the bureaucratic overhead without any of the benefits. While everyone is nice, it sometimes feels very homogenous. Everyone is a bro that never grew up and no real ambition (The exceptions make the rule).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The perceived lack of vision among the management increases uncertainty and damages faith in the direction of the company. Grow some balls and take some ownership in something.

very slow pace and outdated technologies with tons of not required processes

Current Employee - Consultant in Riverwoods, IL

    Pros

    Good work life balance
    Good number of vacations
    Hires interns
lot of activities at the location.

    Cons

Very slow - doesn't look like a financial company
Higher management has very short term vision and views.
Very very outdated technologies and tools.
Developers are almost doing 80% co-ordination work due to not required processes.
As tools and technologies are so outdated and some of the oldies are in comfort zone - they are not trying for outside job as a) they won't get it b) they won't be able to survive there. As a result of that lots of people at the higher management are downplaying their roles and thus advancement is very much difficult in career.
Make sure unnecessary processes and groups are not destroying the morale of the genuine employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play politics. Reach out to the team members and developers rather than getting all the updates from the immediate managers. Performance reviews are not the venue to vent out the frustration on non favorite employees. Company needs fresh ideas.
