Current Employee – been working at Discover full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I feel like my jobs have always been exciting and I understand my role and how it helps the company as a whole improve. The people I work with are great; I have never had a problem with a co-worker.
Cons – Unless you want to move to Chicago, there are limitations to your career development. Emphasis on developing and choosing good leaders is lacking
Advice to Senior Management – Understand the value of the employees that work for you, and provide recognition. Collaborate more with other business units.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at Discover part-time for more than a year
Pros – Health insurance was cheap and dental insurance was said to be the best. Depending on which Team Leader you have, you will have TLs willing to assist and coach you. I have had knowledgeable supervisors the past two years I worked there. This was my first real job and it taught me a lot about what it means to maintain a relationship with a customer. You will have your calls listened to in a group and be in meetings to help improve your performance. Dress code is very lax. It is not surprising to see fellow peers dress in jeans and a t-shirt. It is usually the higher ups who like to dress more formal. Be sure to stay on the phones because if you don't meet your schedule or metrics, you'll soon be terminated. I have seen a lot of peers leave because of this.
Cons – If you are in the customer service department, then the calls are back to back. I have been in several departments within the company and most of them had downtime except for regular customer service. The pay raises are very minimal. Maybe 10 cents to 50 cents every six months. A 50 cent raise is only given if you are promoted to a higher paygrade which is very rare. Otherwise, if you are just doing a performance evaluation, you may go up to 20 cents or so yearly. The pay starts off well as an entry level job, but compared to other companies, the base pay is relatively low with very little room to increase. Most job opportunities are customer service or sales with the almost exact same pay grade so you won't be getting any good increases until you are qualified to become a Coach, TL, or above.
Advice to Senior Management – Staff more people on busy call channels and increase the pay that is competitive with other companies.

Current Employee – been working at Discover full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great culture and Great people. Decent initial compensation.
Cons – Promotional compensation does not pace with external candidates. Top performers are not sufficiently rewarded.
Advice to Senior Management – You'd be better off rewarding your top performers than recruiting from the outside.

Pros – Family oriented culture. Great life work balance. The gym/cafe are awesome!
Cons – Not challenging enough. Most of the promotions are just based on tenure.

Former Employee – worked at Discover for more than a year
Pros – I love the extras that Discover has on site. Nice place to eat, decent food, and the nursing staff and gym are great pulls if you want a one in all stop and available at a work site.
Cons – The pay, you do have a bonus structure, but if you don't hit the bonus there should be a higher base salary.
Advice to Senior Management – Increase the pay and there would not be such a high turn over rate.

Pros – Easy promotions, good benefits, nice people.
Cons – No moving to a dept. you're better suited for before mastering the current one that you're in.
Advice to Senior Management – Give more positive feedback. People do not learn from negative responses.

Former Employee – worked at Discover full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good benefits, 20 days off to start, medical and dental is priced well.
Cons – Team leaders play favorites / nepotism, people with management experience and great stats and or skills to move up are passed over for brown nosers who suck up to the managers who are unqualified. Team Leaders often seem unaware of the department procedures and don't seem to know how to handle the calls in the department.. HR and the team leaders are all friends so if you have a issue and go to HR don't expect any help from them, in fact its strongly recommended that you don't speak with HR at all, trust me it will do more harm than good. If you suspect any issues in the department you are in, request a transfer to another department right away, overall a terrible atmosphere and non stop calls that are inbound and outbound at the same time. If you are a hard worker and expect to be recognized for that, move on to another company. If you are good at bringing the managers a apple and smiling and saying hi to them everyday, and enjoy being treated as a number and disrespected by incompetent Team Leaders this could be the job for you. If you are sick you will be written up unless you can predict your illness, Discover wants you to call in the day before you are sick, I'm never sick, so this didn't happen to me personally, but yet another inane policy Discover implements here and seen plenty of coworkers who were written up for not being able to predict their illness in time.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to the employees rather than what the Team leader has to say, most team leaders I was working with seemed lost with everyday department functions and power hungry.

Former Employee – worked at Discover full-time for less than a year
Pros – Excellent benefits, decent base salary (was $10.00 an hour as of early 2013) for an entry level position and very good commission based compensation for those who excel at the job. Business model is one of honesty and transparency for the most part. Branch leadership was fairly strong.
Cons – Completely results driven. If you aren't one of the better performers, you aren't seeing a whole lot more than that $10.00/hr base. A lot of pressure to meet daily call count/ talk time thresholds. Environment can feel hyper competitive. Once you acquire the licenses to legally do the job, you are on the phone (thrown to the wolves so to speak). **Actual SALES training is insufficient at best. I cannot emphasize this enough.**
Advice to Senior Management – Improve the transition from studying for/ passing NMLS License exams into the actual job. Sales Managers are stretched FAR too thin to be able to offer the type of sales training each individual needs.

Current Employee – been working at Discover full-time for more than a year
Pros – Plenty of opportunity to learn the business, and a lot of strategic movement coming up if you know how to read between the lines. Preference is to promote internally.
Cons – You will stay where you are if you don't express very open interest in promoting within the firm.
Advice to Senior Management – Take advantage of younger employees' flexibility to promote expansion internationally.
