I have been working at Discover full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Good collaboration below Director level.
    Great benefits.
Interesting work helps keep employees engaged.
Flexible schedules, telecommuting and multiple office locations are offered to employees in some departments.

    Cons

Poor training and team integration for new hires: sink or swim mentality.
    Outdated, non-integrated technology.
Pay structure lower than industry standard.
Redundant compliance structures cause friction among senior leaders and inconsistent goals across departments. Employee morale suffers as a result of confusion created by inconsistent messaging.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rewarding conformity with leadership perspective results in inability to do the right thing for the company.
Eliminate redundancy so cross-functional goals align to corporate expectations.
Improve morale by reducing command/control mentality at director and VP levels.

I worked at Discover full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I can't say enough of their culture, amazing people, amazing environment and great managers

    Cons

NO opportunities to move up, unless you are part of a very exclusive club you won't have a chance of moving up. If you are planning to be a mortgage banker for life and dont have any other goals with your life then go right ahead.
Their mortgage products aee just the good old vanilla. No creative programs and no creative marketing initiatives,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your goal was to be top 5 mortgage originator in the country in 5 year, 2014 was the 2nd year and you are not on track. Time to re-evaluate your strategy?

I worked at Discover full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Credible and competent leadership at C level. Ethical and innovative company seeking to change the relationship between banks and customers. Good company culture, time off, and other benefits. Numerous valuable internal enrichment opportunities and presentations. Many good people, encouraged to grow/change positions regularly. Products you can believe in and evangelize for. Call centers and most customer-facing positions are well supported with good systems, training, monitoring, and rewards. Truly world class!

    Cons

My experience is at the corporate headquarters in Riverwoods, IL. Highly bureaucratic and political. VP and Director level decisions may be based less on facts and more on personal ambitions and preferences. The extent to which you can enjoy the culture and internal benefits depends primarily upon the ethos and demands of your immediate supervisor and position. Often more to do than can reasonably be expected. HR is a disorganized mess that doesn't serve the employees or management well. After initial "orientation", you're on your own! Technology is a patchwork of mostly undocumented systems rather than truly integrated. Huge backlog of projects competing for resources. Hard to find subject matter expertise due to constant personnel turnover and lack of importance placed upon documentation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach (Discover core values, such as "doing the right thing") day in and day out, at all levels for all individuals. Build systems and place an emphasis on creating usable documentation. The amount of time and effort that is wasted and duplicated is mind-boggling!!!! HR needs a complete overhaul with less dog and pony and more meat and potatoes.

I have been working at Discover full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great time off / vacation time for new employees and then 3 more extra days at 5 year anniv.

    Cons

Senior Management is not as connected with the people reporting under them. Moving within the company is not as fluid or smooth as believed to be. Moving up in the company is not very easy, there is a lot of internal corp politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid playing favoritism. Discuss career paths and growth with employees fairly and honestly.

I have been working at Discover full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discover has a very unique environment. They believe that if they treat their employees well then in turn we will treat the customers well, which in turn will make the company money. It has been working for them. They have a wide range of opportunities. You are able to move around very easily from team to team.

Discover has an open door policy. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help, it has a great culture.

    Cons

For the most part I have not seen many cons to working for Discover. The company is very meeting centered, so at times it makes your days/weeks very stressful but that is to be expected at most jobs.
