    Pros

Great atmosphere and wonderful people to work with- very friendly.

    Cons

Slightly understaffed and not likely to receive a full time job offer.

    Advice to Management

    Help interns get hired.

    Pros

Smart, creative team. Always willing to help and have a good time. Corporate environment that doesn't feel corporate.

    Cons

Upper management needs to listen to younger people more. They're stuck in their ways.

    Advice to Management

Do more than listen to support staff, actually try and implement ideas.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, especially for working parents (LOVE the backup care option), really looks after their own -- lots of opportunities to stay within Discovery and move around the company

    Cons

Too many meetings, lots of value on status quo, not many opportunities to take risks

    Advice to Management

Cut down on meetings, do more "big swings," give more budget for risk-taking projects

    Pros

Great team, hands on experience, real opportunity to work full time after graduation if they like you and see that you are a hard worker and would fit well with the team. It is awesome to see how big Discovery really is while seeing it all from the inside. The internship program does not involve getting coffee or being a "gopher," it is about gaining skills and knowledge

    Cons

I would say the only con to working here is that this is only an internship and I can't stay. But I will definitely be keeping in touch with my new network and look for opportunities for when I graduate.

    Advice to Management

My only advice would be to open up more networking opportunities with management for the interns. Having events for the interns that puts them in an intentional networking situation would be beneficial for everyone, even if it is a little awkward at first, but that's networking!

    Pros

Lots of chances to shadow and learn about all different departments in the company

    Cons

Lots of downtime but you are given lots of busy work to pass the less busy time

    Advice to Management

    More guest speaker series!

  7. Discovery Communications is a casual, supportive, collaborative place to work.

    Pros

The biggest pro I could mention would be the flexible schedule. Most managers are more concerned with the work being done well then exactly when you do it. I have seen many people easily get time off or leave work late or come in late because of school graduations, college exams, and doctors appointments without issue.

    Cons

In my experience, the main con would be some of the equipment, like the computers, is a bit older then I would really like. But I am also an intern so I am sure that effects things.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice to management at this time.

    Pros

Hands on real PR work, supervisors who mentor you, supportive work environment, fun people, speakers and events for interns, got to go on interviews with top talent and media outlets.

    Cons

Could get stressful when deadlines come close, sometimes have to do grunt work but someone has to do it.

    Advice to Management

Try to make more opportunities available for former interns to become full time employees.

    Pros

Leaving at 5pm, taking a one hour lunch and having to leave for childcare reasons are all acceptable, especially in the Silver Spring, MD offices. They offer excellent benefits, nice people work at the company, and they have an on site medical office in both NY and MD locations. There are also tons of other benefits that you should take advantage of, but you forget are there for you.

    Cons

Slow moving, resistant to change and new technology, too many meetings, constant changing of top management (but ironically it's just a shuffling of deck chairs as they move the same people from one top spot/brand to the next), lack of vision, and quarterly layoffs (but mostly layoffs every March, July and October - of late those have been Nov-Jan).

    Advice to Management

Stronger leadership from outside the company - you need new ideas, points of view, agents of change, not more "yes" men. Have a clear strategy, provide the resources for emerging areas, celebrate successes but truly learn from your mistakes.
