Pros
With the new senior management team, there's been an increase in healthy risk-taking, moves towards creating a meritocracy, and other changes that have created more optimism within the org.
Cons
Very complex to find ownership and execute, as many things are driven by cross-functinal committees. With multiple business goals at stake, finding agreement can be difficult and there's risk of watering down a project's vision.
Advice to Senior Management
Clearly assign a single owner/leader for a project, and communicate the performance metrics expected.
Pros
Great perspective on the growing importance of digital within the larger Disney organization.
Cons
Big company... so be prepared to love the struggle of multiple devisions and be an aggressive self starter for career advancement.
Pros
Get to work on some of the most visible sites and a well loved brand! Technology is cool and innovative to the extreme. If you are really into visiting the Disney theme parks then it is one of the best places to work as you get to go pretty much go whenever you want (minus really busy "block out" days).
Cons
Overbearing unnecessarily complex technical architecture. Huge monolithic projects, that are quite scary! Great performance != raises or promotions, like most places, playing the politics well is the most effective way to get ahead.
Advice to Senior Management
Better compensation and focus on quality of employes vs quantity
Pros
Being able to say you work for Disney is a huge plus. There are a lot of projects and a lot of opportunities to expand what you are working on. All expense paid travel opportunities.
Cons
Difficult to get decisions on financial matters. It's a big company, so things move slow.
Advice to Senior Management
Line up financial pipelines quickly and keep them running.
Pros
Some truly excellent employees. Decent opportunities for training. Flexible hours, casual dress code, free snacks and sodas. Great place if you are not concerned with career or responsibility advancement; lower-level tasks are often clear and simple.
Cons
Underperforming upper management that is disassociated with employees. Poor communication between departments. Useless middle management. Very few opportunities to shine or create positive change in the organization. Rarely rewards high performers.
Advice to Senior Management
Make more of an effort to understand everyone's job at the grunt level to make better decisions of what tools and technologies are necessary, what processes hurt and help the organization, and what the true roadblocks are. Realize that the middle management layer, on whom you depend to give you accurate information, is largely incompetent and backstabby.
Pros
It's Disney, great company overall, lot's of opportunities if you want to leave.
Cons
Political place, need to play politics and keep you head down to be successful. Challenging or creating business is not rewarded unless you kiss ass.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn how to manage talent
Pros
- appeal of the brand name on your resume
- great perks that you rarely ever get to use. ie free park tickets
Cons
I came in at the worst time possible during all the layoffs. Employee morale was low. During hard times, you would think upper management would be supportive and informed about the changes in the organization .. Instead, they continue to pile on more work load. There is a lack of culture.. It is not Magical nor Delightful.
People were not the friendliest, especially if you are new. But again, that's probably because everyone is constantly stressed about losing the job and obligated to work overtime.
Advice to Senior Management
Please bring back the Disney mission / culture. The only bit of Magic or Disney left is a facade driven toward our guests. The "Magic" within Disney has long left the building... Be more informative and improve on communicating with employees, as well as recognizing the hard workers. Recognition doesn't necessarily mean a public announcement sent out to the entire office. Would be nice if upper-management built rapport with the rest of the employees.
Also, it would be nice if upper management laid down the hierarchical barriers.. Employee relations with one another would significantly improve. Starting from top - down.
Pros
Good people, smart, knowledgeable, hard working, well intentioned, polite. Great brand, exciting space (technology and new media), lots of optimism for future.
Cons
Could take more risks, could definitely be more organized, execution needs work, integration of different groups (bureaucracies) and product leaders.
Advice to Senior Management
Take clear, decisive action. Resolve disputes. Create a transparent meritocracy. Choose winners. Reward success. Punish failure. Move forward. If we execute better, other groups within Disney will become more supportive.
Pros
The Benefits and connections you make are fantastic
Cons
Very political and difficult to move up the ladder.
