Wait until Chancellor Rhee rectifies the system. Stay far away until then.

ProsThe fact that Chancellor Rhee is making major changes in the incompetent administration is a big thumbs-up. Sadly, there is nothing more that I could say to boost morale for this question. On a brighter day, one good reason to work there is the idea that you could position yourself as one of few responsible adults in a child's life. You may be in a position to impact a child in a positive way that his/her irresponsible/unavailable guardians could not. Also, if the Chancellor's pay-for-merit system is implemented someday in the future, the District has the potential to have a high pay scale for teachers.

ConsJust about everything: completely incompetent administration, facilities, children whose parents haven't taught them anything, parents who don't even care to buy their children basic supplies, teachers and aides who are academic underachievers and ill-positioned to advise others, teachers who appear to not even like teaching. Schools have difficulty requisitioning supplies because the District's credit is so shot from many years of incompetent administration that many suppliers refuse to work with the District. Some faucets and roofs have leaked for years without being repaired. Teachers get almost no compensation for sponsoring extracurricular activities. A/C and heating often don't work. One hiring committee member asked about my marital status. It goes on and on.

A place lacking appreciation of it's staff

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent organization and plenty of opportunities offered to assist and volunteer within the schools. Concentration on strengthening project management skills.

    Cons-Very little creative input allowed.
-No recognition for hard work completed
    -no respect for personal time
-"key" staff tend to stick together and look our for their own

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide feedback to all staff members and do not just offer negative feedback. Constructive feedback would be helpful. Bring in EXPERIENCED administrators instead of concentrating on hiring younger people.

ProsStrong, caring people are needed to make a difference in the lives of such needy students, and if you can thrive in an environment regardless of the numerous barriers that exist in the system, then you will be successful.

Consvery limited professional development and clear support system. LImited training available for necessary growth and leadership. Highly dysfunctional and unsatisfying environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementCheck out how other systems have moved forward to improving student achievement and school culture. New initiatives need full implementation and necessary training in order to be successful and carried out.
