As a place to work it has deteriorated significantly i the last 3 years

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe salary levels are OK but there is not much else positive to say currently

ConsThe management style is brutal. There is zero consideration to your life/work balance.
Your views are neither invitied or respected. Team members are openly berrated infront of the rest of the staff. The working atmosphere is very poor. My advice? If you work there - get out!
If you are thinking about working there - don't!

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be less focus on clever systems, processes and fancy store layouts and more focus on getting the basics right: right product, right quanitiy at the right price in the right place at the right time.

dsg- pay you to do the work of a higher payband

Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) Falkirk, Scotland (UK)

ProsEasy to get positions, but may not be the most flexible around holidays. Good to work for if you want part time, and also not bothered about actually getting bonuses etc- most are not really available. The team in some stores can be great friends that you will always remember- in the lower turnover (i.e. good management) stores that is! If you know someone who works at one- ask them about the management- it can make alot of difference. I went through management changes and boy were new management digging a hole for themselves in the store as morale plummets!

ConsNo christmas/new year holidays allowed, plus not much flexibility if you want more hours over fewer days. Expect to possibly get 'done over' when it comes to overtime, good faith work, and also working at the higher position and getting it paid to you in back dated pay- just do not fall for it. Although At times it can be quite a good place to be.

Whatever you do, try to enjoy it, and remember you do not need to go in for their pushing- you have the ability to do things your way- your not paid by commission so serve the customer in your personal advantage.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind out about the ones at your store- your store managers make a would of difference. One store management team were superb- and it refelected in the customer service- most others are terrible

    Is all retail like this?

    Sales Staff (Former Employee)

ProsCan't think of much - Staff discount and occasional incentives

ConsHigh pressure to sell additional insurance, often unneeded. Poor, superficial training. Some dreadful products.

Advice to Senior ManagementLess of the management speak, and actually do something. Hi-Tech products need staff with more hi tech knowledge.

Business Sales Advisor (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsVarious product training available within the company, Huge pool of knowledge for consumer products and electronic gadgets. Great for someone who loves to tinker with products and latest gadgets, as many manufactures gives you live demo

ConsCould do better on wages, sales incentive and bonus structure is not very lucrative. Management can be more people friendly.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should take the feedback from colleagues and forward it to policy makers.

    Run of the Mill

Logistics (Former Employee) Sheffield, England (UK)

    ProsYou get paid on time.
    Nice people to work with.
Since its an electronic retailer, an employee gets plenty of discounts on the in house products and have good local discounts.

ConsRetail Dead End jobs. No real room for good promotions. Uninteresting management, the middle management seems stuck up and not flexible.

They only look at processes and not the employee, in another words working there would just be like you're another employee number. Machines will start automating soon enough.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't treat employees like numbers.

Big box retail is a tough sector since Amazon changed the game

Project Manager (Current Employee) Hemel Hempstead, England (UK)

    ProsHeritage of the brand
    Some great senior people
    Rapidly changing industry
    Household name
    Technology sector is cutting edge

ConsPublic perception is that Dixons still make 40% margin on high tech, so the brand isn't loved.
Everything is about operations or product pricing. Limited opportunity to build rapport with suppliers and/or an engaging customer experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep going with the transformation. Work on brand image and ensuring there are good career opportunities for the workforce.
