I worked at Dohrn Transfer full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They have a fairly competitive pay scale now. Most of the people are pretty good to work with.

    Cons

They have old equipment and don't maintain it very well. The management is poor and have no communication with the employees. Safety department is a joke as well as human resources. They don't respond to phone calls or emails. Very poor treatment of employees overall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together and make your employees feel like they matter.

I have been working at Dohrn Transfer full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working the day shift and getting off before 5pm.

    Cons

Benefits are not all that great. Have to get permission for time off at least 3 weeks or more in advance, no short notice. No OT allowed. No promotions or wage increases. Thirty minute lunch breaks. Does not allow the employees to advance to another position within the company, would rather go to a local Temp. Agency and get people who do not know a thing about the company.

I have been working at Dohrn Transfer full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people to work for, Its a small company so its easy to jump in and feel like part of the family, sky is the limit.

    Cons

Raises are few and far between. Reviews/Raises rarely happen and if they do its usually random. Salaried employees are treated more like hourly-It shows your amount broken down by hour on your paystub, if the office is closed (black friday) you have to take PTO or you wont get paid. They are ok with you working 80 hours a week but if you work less than 40 they dont pay you. They expect you to work all the time, vacation is frowned upon, flexibility is minimal. No Christmas Party- Most people would think this is not a big deal, but having a Christmas party is a way to say "Thanks" to all of your employees. That would cost Dohrn money so it doesnt happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees- if the office is closed and someone is salary, dont make them take PTO. Give them Raises! I dont care if its $100 or an extra 10 cents/hr, a raise shows your employees you care, keeps them satisfied and stops them from looking for a way out.
Throw a Christmas party for your employees. What are you the grinch? Be thankful you have the employees you do. Show them you care, one day a year isn't going to hurt your Bottom Line.

Be more flexible- embrace the current era, flexibility is the future of the workforce.

At the end of the day we know this is still a Blue Collar industry, but that dosnt mean you have to make it feel that way. The Sky is the limit with Dohrn. With a few tweaks the turnover rate could go down and it could be a GREAT long term company to work for..

I have been working at Dohrn Transfer full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Home daily. Pay is good for the area. Can usually pick up extra work on the weekend if wanted. Some linehaul runs take about 12 hrs to do while others take about 10. I work about 10 hrs a day.

    Cons

The equipment is not maintained well. There are a lot of DOT violations related to the equipment. You work 5 days a week which I wouldn't want to do if I was working 12 hrs or more a day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't ignore something written up on a vehicle's inspection report. Take better care of the equipment and there will be less breakdowns and DOT violations.

    I worked at Dohrn Transfer

    Pros

Dohrn is small enough that you can usually find a person to answer questions to help you solve problems.

    Cons

Benefits are on the low side. Performance reviews are a joke. If they are done once a year it is a miracle. They are fair to most on reviews but there is a good guys club that influences the process. Only the upper management can make decisions, if you have an issue they can be very hard to reach. The upper management does not delegate responsibilities often enough. On the rare occasion that they do, they fail to follow through when the delegated task was not completed as they requested. Hours are long and busy, 55+ per week, usually more. The equipment is poorly maintained. Safety dept is understaffed and Safety is an afterthought to most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a company plan and stick to it. The company seems to be wandering aimlessly reacting to problems that arise. More direct lines of communication, allow the competent managers to make independent decisions and back them up. The Dohrn family is not seen in the day to day operations. Upper management is non-confrontational. They don't want to address the issues with poor performers so they find other ways to make them leave.
