I worked at Dollar General part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    This job requires no experience.

    Cons

You are expected to accomplish all tasks in a short amount of time, while still running the front of the store and watching customers to prevent shoplifting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The structure I see is to keep one manager and one sales associate. This is not enough to run the store. Please take some of the pressure off of the managers.

    Pros

The best thing about our company is that YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT!. If you give 100% you will get all the support you need. You are given the tools to work with. I was given the opportunity to work my way up and I have earned my way.

    Cons

A little bit better training with store managers as far as reviewing reports and following the numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

It's a very easy going job. Not hard to get the hang of things. Friendly people I worked with had lots of nice customers.

    Cons

At the location I was at I was working part-time and was getting almost 10 hours a week. I don't know what was going on there so I left to find better opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to check and make sure employees are liking the job and asking about management because my management got away with a lot of stuff and was cutting our hours MAJOR!!!

    Pros

The main good thing about working for DG is that it is only 2 miles from home.

    Cons

Challenging issues of working at DG include poor management, under 8.00/hour and only 18 hours per week. It is challenging because I do not have a second job or my spouse is unable to work. The manager never orders enough of the cigarettes that sell the most, is consistently running out of things that customers are looking for, and very unlikely expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice is give the employees a discount. Not even management gets an employee discount the way it is set up, and here, trust your employees.

Current Employee - Store Development Professional in Goodlettsville, TN

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working at the Store Support Center in Goodlettsville, the opportunities for growth and advancement are limitless. The organizational structure is flat, with accessible, transparent leaders who truly care about their employees. The people here are more like family than co-workers. Whether you're a high octane self-starter or a consistent contributer, there's a place for you at DG.

    Cons

As with any discount retailer, the support staff is very lean and the work load can be overwhelming at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Where possible, allow support employees to work remotely from home a few times a month. This option would virtually cost nothing and would be well-received by employees.
