    Pros

If you need a job, this is one. They won't pay you more than minimum wage and they'll have you doing more than you should, but if you need some extra money, this is a way to do it.

    Cons

They expect a little too much out of the cashiers. While the stocking crew sticks mostly to just stocking, the cashiers have to stock, work the register, handle customers, count their drawers, and do custodial work, among other random things. It can get a bit overwhelming, and in my experience, they tried to have me do multiple things at once and got angry when one wouldn't get done.

    Advice to Management

Take it easy on the cashiers. You have other employees, too, so try to spread the work around a little more. I understand that cashiers are there at all times vs. the rest of the staff, but it can get overwhelming.

    I worked at Dollar Tree

    Pros

    - Great as a part-time job if you are a college student as shifts generally are 5 hours - Scheduling is usually flexible and worked around the availability of everyone - You can get the customer service experience which you can use to land future jobs

    Cons

    - The 10 minute breaks - Hours can be cut any week if part-time, mainly during the slow months of the year or if sales not met, you can be working 20 hours one week then be cut to half of that - Working nearly every weekend and being open nearly all holidays from open to close - Most holidays are not holiday paid, just regular pay - Sometimes schedules are not posted until Friday, which is absurd considering most employees have a life outside of work. Schedules should be up on Monday, Tuesday at the latest, every week. - New employees put on recovery shift during the Holiday season instead of being trained to run the register

    Advice to Management

Consider giving benefits/PTO/higher yearly raises to long-term employees as being a long-term employee (2+ years) shows seniority and dedication to the company, and the fact that a good amount of part-time employees work hard and do what they can each time they work to help their company.

    Pros

Friendly, fast paced environment. Wonderful training to get you started. It's easy to get friendly with other store managers and work together by bouncing ideas off each other. Usually district manager supports the stores.

    Cons

Constant turnover of staff. Payroll is such a strong focus that it inhibits the ability of the Store Manager to properly staff their building. If other stores in your area are doing poorly, it can have a negative effect on your staffing and workforce needs.

    Advice to Management

Create a real life model for staffing needs. Increase payroll and decrease the amount of product that is constantly in the stores. This will help reduce markdowns and keep product rotation as an attainable goal.

    Pros

The people I worked with were mostly very sweet, kind, and real people. The customers who came in were pretty understanding and the store was small enough to know easily where everything is.

    Cons

Co-workers often failed to keep their job priorities straight, and more times than not I found myself picking up the slack of others that went unpunished. Being a seasonal worker, it was hard to keep up the demand for our products since we always were busy stocking the rest of store. It was always reoccurring, and made it hard to do what I needed to when other things that were vital to store cleanliness and health codes were constantly violated and not to standards.

    Advice to Management

Be sure that people are actively doing their part, and that goals are constantly being met. Utilize your workers to where they are best at, to help the store perform more efficiantly.
