I have been working at Dominion Virginia Power full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Very diverse - coal generation, nuclear generation, natural gas and oil generation. Plus, expanding into wind and solar generation and natural gas production/distribution. Opportunities abound!

    Cons

Certain job titles keep you locked in to just a few, select locations with little to no chance of expanding an employee's opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If a current employee bids internally on an open job, look past the job title they currently have and check their resume. Their could be some "superstars" being overlooked because they currently hold a position somewhere else.

I worked at Dominion Virginia Power as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great movement opportunities within the company. Professional atmosphere, treat interns very well. Competitive pay. Interns given challenging projects and supported by approachable upper management. Was even allowed a week of unpaid vacation which was surprising for an internship

    Cons

Did not receive adequate training upon arrival, would have liked a more structured on boarding process.

I worked at Dominion Virginia Power as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I worked in the Environmental laboratory as an intern in Waterford, CT and it was the best experience of my life. The atmosphere was incredibly friendly, helpful, and the work was fun. I loved going to work every day.

    Cons

The only con was I wish I could have gotten a full time permanent position there.

    Re-Engineering of the Customer-1 application.

Former Employee - (Very) Senior Programmer/Analyst - DB2/CICS/COBOL in Richmond, VA

I worked at Dominion Virginia Power as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Outstanding business/technology reputation in the Nuclear Power industry.

    Cons

Adequate program/system requirements were not passed down from the "architects/leads" to the Programmer/Analysts, nor sufficient/knowledgeable answers given when questions were asked, regarding "how much" of the "old"/existing technical/program architecture/infrastructure was to be retained, discarded, replaced, or modified.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Analysis/Re-Programming/Upgrade of the Customer-1 application would not have been so problematic if you had used Senior/Lead System/Data Architects, Lead Developers with more "on-shore" experience in the CICS/DB2/COBOL TECHNOLOGY and the ability to better COMMUNICATE the program "change" REQUIREMENTS to the people doing the programming. A more Senior/Technical "Critical Path" Project Manager would have been aware of this.

I worked at Dominion Virginia Power full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very ethical and truthful company. Great work/life balance. Good benefits, including a retirement plan. Senior management seemed to make good decisions. Co is financially very stable. HQ office was in a good location.

    Cons

My department reorganized numerous times during my career. Poor performers were generally tolerated, resulting in an increase workload on the others. There was a perception that management would punish those that challenged them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management should ensure open communications.

I have been working at Dominion Virginia Power

    Pros

I have nothing good to say about them. They have very very very poor service.

    Cons

They ask for medical information with out obtaining a HIPAA form, as required by federal law, they hang up the phone, they never answer the question you put to them. They do not have a medical unit to back up the medical form they send out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a medical unit or cancel the Serious Medical Condition Certification Form
