I have been working at Domtar

    Pros

Domtar has good benefits, long term goals, decent wages, supervisors that care about quality over quantity. The supervisors treat you like a person and not like some lowly laborer.

    Cons

Working with people that use the union to keep thier jobs instead of trying to do a good job.Working with equipment that is"fixed" to run instead of being repaired properly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees' that actually run the equipment, make the product, and handle the finished goods. Watch how they work and how they react to a good job done well.

  2.

Well run company and with a little more focus on teamwork between the two head offices it could be top-notch

    I worked at Domtar full-time

    Pros

    Great people, well-organized company.

    Cons

Politics between the two head offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have some fantastic, bright people - find a way to get the two offices working well together as a team - you don't have to be in the same physical location to be perfect teams. Develop your expertise in both places and encourage growth.

I worked at Domtar full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-Good environment to learn when you are a junior,
    -Some really smart people,
    -Nice Health Insurance

    Cons

-They have been removing perks/advantages in the last years (ISP bill paid if on support/call, 1 week instead of 2 weeks can be banked per year,...)
    -Heavy change process
-Some crappy tool to work with: Monitoring tool (CA Monitoring), Ticketing System (Easyvista), ...
    -Silos per technology
-Disconnect between the field work and the Management
    -Some political games/wars between managers
-Rumor that the HQ will be moved to US

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Talk to your employees, come on the field, never saw my manager or vp come to say "hey guys how are you ? what can i do to help you do your work ?"
    -Reduce the numbers of meetings

I have been working at Domtar full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Safety Policy seems good. Safety awards are OK too- but only if you like hats and coats time and time again, Tim's and Subway $15 gift card, and the occasional burger/sausage barbacue put on by management.

    Cons

Don't ever consider working for this company if you think you're going to make a difference or think that you're actually valued as an employee. I worked hard and was dedicated to this mill for over 30 years and they bring in a recent college grad and pay him the same as me! - and company wants me to train him!!! Sounds fair to me - not!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Espanola mill MUST seriously reconsider their hiring practice as is. No respect for senior employees. CORPORATE Human Resources office needs to be more involved, needs to be better informed and care more about hiring pratices and respect of senior employees at this mill. Human Resources department hiring practices at this mill are a joke!

I have been working at Domtar full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good salary, insurances, bonus, downtown location.

    Cons

Very conservative mindset . Fear that the Montreal Head Office will close sooner or later.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open to new ways of working such as telecommuting.

I worked at Domtar full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Training plans quite good. If the employee meets educational requirements..person has much ability to do well at Domtar.

    Cons

Many facets of the company, difficult to move up. For regular employees..little opportunities.
Work can be very hard..but pays well above average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to employees. Especially with layoffs and plant closures.
How such issues are handled needs more care. Especially when moving outsourcing our jobs.
Cornwall mill closure was a huge hit for the city..will have an everlasting effect.

I have been working at Domtar full-time

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. Good co workers , good learning for first experience

    Cons

Industry is dying , expansion and career opportunities in US only
Old way of managing, no flexibility

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get updated to keep up with new generation. Money is not everything

I have been working at Domtar full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good work benefits, and a real care for environmental concerns.

    Cons

Half of the upper management is in the US, the other is in Canada; lack of communication and each headquarter looking out for its own well-doing creates a considerable deal of conflicts of direction and focus, and tension in the work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More integration between the two headquarters to be worked on.
