Pros
Leading technology in their industry, and a strong customer base that really loves the product. It was a fairly employee-friendly company, relatively little bureaucratic hoop-jumping. The culture was more conservative than a start-up (no dogs or skateboards in the office), but still fundamentally a cool software company. The VP of Development is one of the original founders.
Cons
They just go acquired by a much more conservative company, and several of the old offices were closed, and many of the long-term employees were laid-off. I think you have to assume that the culture will change to a more conservative one.
Advice to Senior Management
Double-Take's recent challenge was that it was not responding to the market trends well enough. If the new management slows down innovation in pursuit of short-term cash flow, they will probably loose this market.
Pros
Middle management is excellent.
The product is great and does what is promised.
Advancement opportunities.
Feedback from field engineers is now being acknowledged and incorporated into the product.
New management is promising a renewed focus and improvments where needed. It is beginning to show. Vision management appears to have what they say they do. Vision.
Cons
Upper management prior to Vision Solutions acquisition was short-sighted.
The product was allowed to degrade.
Feedback from field engineers either did not get back to development teams or was ignored.
Advice to Senior Management
New management please do everything you have stated you will do. The Double-Take team is excellent at execution and delivery when pointed in the right direction and given a clear goal.
Pros
Management is clueless
Salary is ok
Software sell itself
Engineers are top notch
Cons
Management is clueless
No communication to staff
HR is blind to all employee issues
No loyalty to Sales Engineers
"Good Ole Boys" network very discriminative unless your one
Too easily thrown under the bus constantly
Too many chiefs with nothing to do, just a lazy title......and you wonder where the sales are ??
Advice to Senior Management
MOVE ON !! Please, bring in some fresh ideas and let company grow, not stagnant with Old Mentality that has been here for years.
Company will never succeed with "old timers"
Pros
Lot of freedom to do the job, ability to travel and because of niche market you are able to meet lot of people in all industries.
Cons
Product can still be improved on some levels
Advice to Senior Management
Make product more stable and focus on what is really required on the field
Pros
Family friendly, nice culture, overall a fun place to work. Benefits are good, and the salaries are good. Relaxed casual dress code and atmosphere. Lots of smart fun people. Free donuts on Fridays.
Cons
Sales are stagnant, lots of product bugs because QA is almost non-exisant these days. We haven't really pushed out a decent product since we went public. The constant pressure to create new products and add features has killed quality.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop releasing new products and feature for a while and fix all the bugs that are killing our customer base.
Pros
Great compensation package and benefits
Cons
-Upper Management (Directors,VPs,President)was absolutely terrible.
-Professionalism-terrible
-Employees were talked to very disrespectfully
-It was like a "good ole boys club"
-HR acts blind to everything going on at the company
-Upper Management was allowed to bring people in and let them go one after 6months with no questions asked
Advice to Senior Management
I would say that if you want your business to succeed, you better get on the ball and get rid of those in charge that are taking your business down. The crudeness, disrespect and over all treatment of employees by the upper management you hired, is extremely disrespectful and you are not oblivious to it. You had some fantastic people hired within the last couple years and you allowed your upper management to call them on the phone and get rid of them without any explanation other than, " We do not have to give you an answer as to why you are being let go, we are just letting you go". This happened numerous times to numerous employees. Get a hold of your company before someone else does.
Pros
Very good technical sales team that works together to help each other.
Some excellent Enterprise Sales Managers.
Good product mix.
Cons
Software products increasingly inconsistent in quality.
One product fixes an issue but similar ones (that have different code bases) don't get fixed.
Advice to Senior Management
Sales needs more input into the development process. Engineering is developing products that don't meet current or prospective customer needs that sales team wants to communicate to Engr but can't effectively.
Pros
Growing company, good product, most people are high-performers, not very bureaucratic, may be able to work from home. Management seems very loyal to employees. Employees generally have very high morale.
Cons
Company is very distributed, which can be good, but also limits visibility in the organization, and may limit career growth (unless you want to move).
Advice to Senior Management
Great overall job managing the stability, growth, and market position of the company. Worry a little bit more about career development plans for employees.
