I have been working at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This place rocks! The autonomy! The ability to control your own destiny! It's like being an entrepreneur in your job but with the safety net ( and retirement system) of government service. If you like being on the cutting edge of innovation in schools, this place is made for you.

    Cons

There are a few grumpy people in the community longing for the old days of 1980's style education who try their best to trash the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't limit yourself to the colleges of education for people to put in the classroom.

    Pros

Loved working here for the first 14 years, coworkers were amazing people dedicated to enriching the lives of students.

    Cons

The administration is awful some of the worst additions to that team have happened in 2014, new COO is right on track to run every decent employee out the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

focus on the amazing students there and stop trying to turn a profit

I worked at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Easy place to work. Never asked to do things too difficult. Comparable pay within the field of work. Always able to get proper equipment for job needing to be done.

    Cons

Doesn't seem to promote growth for all employees equally. Makes some small tasks a overbearing chore where it need not be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of office and all day meetings. Back to basics work when allowed to work no micro managing.

    Pros

I received a lot of relovent certifications, and they were always updated on time. Very thorough training for drivers.

    Cons

Alot of employees with seniority have very bad attitudes about the district, and aren't afraid to say anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reprimand those who are verbal about their job dissatisfaction!!

I worked at Douglas County School District (CO) part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent salary, loved the school hours options, involved parents, very much so on top of technological advancement, paid us for taking staff development classes (like $400 per class) and for participating in fitness programs.

    Cons

Not very diverse AT all. Some of the administrators that REALLY needed to go, were just left at some schools even though they were not at all being productive. Now however they have no union and salaries are cut, they do not pay into benefits and teacher rights and respect is dwindling.

I worked at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Was a great culture when I was there. Worked with some amazing peers. Nice to know that your work benefits the community.

    Cons

rapid growth in some areas led to improperly staffed divisions. Middle management are some of the nicest people you will ever meet but they are not good managers. The current trends of the highest levels of administration are bringing a lot of politics into situations that just make everything complicated. Seems like the organization is in the news every week for all the wrong reasons and this creates a lot of distractions.

But the worst is that the pay they offer is low. Make sure you negotiate the highest salary you can coming in the door because you will not get raises or promotions even when they are promised. It just does not happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more honest and open about your objectives. Your employees are not as dumb as you think and don't want to hear the same "spin" you give to the media. They want to know what the leaders are doing and how to support it to make them more successful and their jobs more enjoyable but when you hide what you are really doing and change the target and the rules constantly it eventually just leads to confusion, low morale and burnout and people looking for new opportunities.

I have been working at Douglas County School District (CO) part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

-Wonderful principal, teachers, families, and students
-Each school has autonomy to make some decisions regarding schedules, allocation of budget
-I benefit from the market based pay scale. I would not not work for this district if they did not make their pay for SLPs more competitive. The previous pay was not commensurate with other districts or jobs outside of public schools.

    Cons

-I have virtually no budget for materials. Everything I use, I have purchased
-Orchestra, band, even the school bus costs parents extra... while plenty of money is directed to upper management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I try to focus on my job and ignore the general complaints in the district about upper management. It does not usually affect the service I provide to students. There is much discontent with management from both teachers and families and they will be short-lived.

BOE Regime + not so "super"intendent + excessive reform = total disaster

I have been working at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great students, involved parents, ample supplies (depending on what school you work at). Teachers,, staff, and building level administration trying to navigate this oppressive culture to provide a quality educational experience.

    Cons

Low pay in comparison to other metro area districts, disappearing benefits, total and complete chaos from district leadership initiatives, excessive reform initiatives from district level, unsupportive and disrespectful board, oppressive district climate and culture....list too excessive to continue

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the kickbacks you are getting from privatizing public education and move on to your next district wrecking endeavor.
