    Pros

Definitely get a sense that you're helping out animals and their owners during a stressful situation

    Cons

Management didn't give me the impression that they cared much about their employees or their well-being. There seemed to be a lot of turn-over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and how satisfied they are when they come to work. The fact that they're doing good things only goes so far if they aren't happy with the company they work for.

    I worked at DoveLewis

    Pros

Wonderful ideals, amazing facility, passionate, highly professional, and engaged co-workers, sense of belonging to something that makes a difference/provides a quality service. The people who work here truly do care about what they do and the people and animals they help. It's inspiring.

    Cons

Upper leadership often comes across as cold and caring more about money and adhering to rules than the effects these decisions have on the team on the floor and the patients they serve. I don't think that is truly the case, but that's how their actions often read. Some community programs have suffered due to seeming shift in nonprofit portion's mission lately. High turnover, often due to burnout (emergency medicine is stressful). Clients are almost always very stressed and emotional, and sometimes have unrealistic expectations of cost of emergency care/DoveLewis' limited charity funds. This can create stress for employees as well. Working at a nonprofit is not going to make you rich- it's rewarding work, but not necessarily financially.

    Pros

State of the art emergency hospital, great staff veterinarians

    Cons

Upper management and HR create such a hostile work environment for the hospital staff. Your concerns and suggestions are met with cold opposition, and they will create an even more hostile work environment if you so choose to speak out on important animal welfare issues. I've witnessed countless coworkers receive very harsh reprimands when voicing legitimate concerns. The turnover rate is abnormally high, and it's abundantly clear why. The hospital staff is under appreciated, scrutinized when attempting at a work-life balance, and often mistreated by management. I've watched some of the most dedicated and ethically sound coworkers quit due to utter frustration at the corrupt politics of this organizations. Along the same line, I've watched many loyal and hardworking coworkers get fired for unjust reasons. It's beyond unfortunate that upper management can poison the great potential this organization holds. I hope someday this will change, and DoveLewis will clearly see the value in its employees, and start treating us with the respect we all deserve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CEO needs to carefully review his management team. Want an honest account of your employees' job satisfaction? Then send out a survey to all your employees, ensure anonymity, have the surveys sent directly back to you, and make the changes that so desperately need to take place.

I worked at DoveLewis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It really is very difficult to think of any positives other than relationships formulated with other staff members.

    Cons

Words cannot even begin to express how terrible it was to work there. Complete lack of disrespect from senior leadership, specifically the CEO. The level of passive aggressive behavior was remarkable. The executive leadership (CEO, COO and HR Director) work systematically to make the lives of employees they dislike terrible so that they are forced to quit. Employee morale is in the dumps and the turnover in both the medical and business areas is getting ridiculous. Work-life balance is practically non-existent and employees are scolded for trying to maintain their sanity by taking days off. The employee benefits aren't even that great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Attention Board of Directors: Please, please, please wake up and take action. There needs to be a serious adjustment in the executive leadership and by adjustment, I mean replacing the CEO.

I have been working at DoveLewis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Amazing animal care. - the best in the industry. Great office location. Decent technology. It's great getting to spend the day with animals.

    Cons

The staff is completely overworked and underpaid. The leadership team is comprised of insecure people who will throw you under the bus the first chance they get. There is absolutely no trust in management and the talented staff members keep quitting, which makes it very difficult to continue doing your job. Oh, and the benefits are terrible!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiding in your sound-proof offices! Maybe try walking around and saying hi to the staff that make you look good on a daily basis. And stop being mean - it's not very becoming.

I worked at DoveLewis full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Thos hospital staff has a core group who really are the best ER/ICU/Surgery veterinary professionals in the area. Everything besides their medical expertise and dedication to their patients and the field is awful.

    Cons

Leadership is nonexistent, hypocritical... Just name something bad about management and transparency, and they've done it or will do it soon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit. Let people who truly care about the mission take over. You are not the leadership you think you are, and no one working there actually trusts you. Seriously.

I worked at DoveLewis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The organization has a good reputation and is well-respected (mostly) in the community which tends to attract great employees (if even for only a short period). The medical staff is very knowledgeable, compassionate and truly cares about the well-being of the animals in their care.

    Cons

Terrible leadership, starting at the top. Divisive executive leadership and managers with a somewhat inappropriate management culture that pits people against each other, favors interpersonal office relationships and "cliques" - both on the business and programs side and the medical side. While the business is run very well, it's very deceiving to the general public about the true nature of the services (including the cost) and what exactly qualifies them as a "non-profit." Leadership and operational focus is on making money, not serving the community. Money spent on bonuses and exorbitant compensation at the leadership level instead of community programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in a board of directors and leadership that are interested in advancing the mission of the organization and elevating the status of animal welfare programs and services in the community - not making money and their own personal fulfillment.

I worked at DoveLewis (more than a year)

    Pros

Getting to work with animals, but there are a lot of places where you can do that.

    Cons

Still a corporation. Emphasis was not on the employees that took care of the animals, but on those that marketed and did administration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes you are a company, but remember that you are there for animals.

I have been working at DoveLewis

    Pros

OUTSTANDING medical teams, great location in NW Portland, fairly good pay rates for the industry, lots of learning opportunities (it's a teaching hospital).

    Cons

Non-profit organization, not much money to go around (raises, bonuses, etc.), a lot of communication issues between hospital staff and business/management staff.
