I worked at Dow Chemical full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, excellent facilities, great scientists. It has been at times a really enjoyable place work. There have been some absolutely fantastic chemistry projects to work on.

    Cons

Very much a risk averse research environment which stifles creativity. So process orientated that it also limits productivity and can be exceedingly complicated to get stuff done.

Because of the departmental/business organization is the way it is it can make people very "siloed" and adversarial...... I don't think the problems are what the company wants , but it is a situation that senior leadership has unfortunately created!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your good people more.... move the non-contributors on more quickly

I worked at Dow Chemical as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Company has maintained it's respected position in the business world by maintaining traditional business practices.

    Cons

The company is reluctant to bring in fresh and new ideas by tapping into the young emerging professionals. Limited in offering training and professional development as well as implementing innovative software systems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire younger professionals and adopt more current applications to make your processes less cumbersome and more efficient. Implement more professional development opportunities. Salaries should be more competitive with the current market. Evaluate your contractors as an asset to the company and consider those that show promise as a great addition to your team.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great work/life balance and alot of autonomy over your roles at an early age. If you give good reason for the company to trust you and your judgement, you can really take your career where ever you'd like it.

    Cons

Not much focus on HR's involvement with employees, succession planning and since Dow isn't integrated with oil, it's not as profitable as other Houston based petrochem companies thus, salaries seem to be lower.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep focusing on your people, especially to the highly volatile and attractive Houston market.
