I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time

    Pros

Opportunity to work with great people, excellent benefit and work-life balance. Dow offers 9-80 or 4-10 schedule along with 5-8. I have nothing but only great thing to say about Dow.

    Cons

Using force ranked for evaluation can be troublesome for some cases. Many times, force ranked method could be biased to people who are responsible for bigger projects compare to one who might be responsible for multiple small projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Other than the evaluation process, I do believe Dow is a great company.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is competitive compared to other chemical companies, benefits are quite good, and work-life balance is very good. Workplace culture is competitive but not cut-throat, and most everyone is helpful and good to work with.

Lots of resources are available for R&D work and there are plenty of experts around should you need to leverage expertise in your projects. Good support for IP fillings should you have patentable technologies come out of your research.

Safety protocols are first in class.

    Cons

Like other big companies, there is a process for everything, and it can be burdensome at times.

Safety protocols are excellent at Dow, but at times can make progress quite difficult for lab researchers.

Too much emphasis on growing project management and other soft skills, not enough emphasis on growing technical expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cost cutting efforts are good for improving the bottom-line temporarily, but not when it comes at the expense of top-line growth.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Dow is very people oriented, provides great training opportunities. I love how there is always work to be done, I feel like I can add a valuable contribution every day. Pay is very good for ME's. There is a lot of growth potential in the company. Dow has very good ethics, puts safety first.

    Cons

Seems like a lot of work is spread over not enough people some times. Some of the management systems that are used can be counterproductive/reduce efficiency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on rewarding people on the work that they do, especially on the lower/middle levels (i.e. plant operations staff)

    Pros

Very Technical environment with a lot of experts in various fields of disciplines. Good learning Platform for new hires who want to become competent in any given role.

    Cons

Too structured, managers are focused on their on ascension and focus less on employee growth. Pay is below average for a big company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on a less structured hierarchical environment and focus on building networks. Also allow flexibility for employees to grow

I have been working at Dow Chemical as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great consideration for work/life balance, you will never feel overworked; Great people and culture; if you are an intern/co-op, this is the best place to do a summer internship - there will be 50 other interns to hang out with and you will get a great experience; mobility up and laterally is easy and encouraged; compressed work schedule (four-tens or nine-eighties); strong emphasis on safety

    Cons

Since is it a chemical company, maintenance is treated like a second cousin sometimes (production is the place to be); as with any big company, there are sometimes so many policies in place that it can be hard to get things done; Freeport is a bit of a drive to Houston if you want alot to do; it is hot in the summer

    Pros

People below senior leadership are great, well some

    Cons

Senior leadership- they just want to cut heads

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about what you are doing to people, we can't work to death with less people. NEA is making it worse and so inefficient.

I have been working at Dow Chemical as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

There are no pros for HDC

    Cons

I have worked with Dow on 2 of its largest capital projects. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST especially if you plan to come in as a contractor. Senior management treats people like crap here. No matter how much work you put in, how friendly you are or much of a contribution you try to make, you are consistently muffled and told "to stay in your lane." The turnover rate is high and the leadership teams will stick up for other Dow employees even if they are at fault. There is a manager here who has been reported multiple times to HR and to respective staffing agencies and they refuse to do anything about this way this person is treating their employees. Work processes are not properly put in place and many of them are very effective. The few people who have been able to climb the ladder or obtain permanent positions with Dow, had to back stab and brown nose their way in to the lunch table with senior leaders. This place has so many meetings that one is never able to complete work or tasks that are assigned. Unfortunately with all of the meetings, nothing is ever resolved. My counterparts are often depressed with coming here everyday and the job itself is nothing more than a Data Entry Admin Assistant. And the trouble is not just for contract employees, hundreds of Dow staff have been forced into early retirement. If you are not "friends" wit the higher ups, they will get rid of you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management spends too much time, throwing others under the bus and blaming their employees for errors rather than spending time training and developing them. You wonder why your turnover rate is so high but just remember that people don't leave bad companies, they leave bad management.
