I worked at Downer Group full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Regular work, Enjoyed a period of company growth and change. They paid regularly if on a salary. Opportunity to work on projects covering multiple and varied level of complexity, and expertise.

    Cons

Limited vision or scope or the commitment to the idea of continued improvement and development. Poor senior management, lacking leadership in an effective plan or communication of one to grow the business by way of continued improvement. Terrible payroll structure combined with the above failings, leading to the early loss of talented people. Inability to manage middle management or gage there performance against anything other than the short time profitability of projects. Never any information of any sort given freely to the people that they employ, even when obligated to under agreement, contract or legislation.

    Advice to Management

There are too many people that have moved through the business or have been employed into the business that don't know or understand the products under their management. Failing to develop positive links with all stakeholders within and without the business missing opportunities to change and grow in a challenging and changing environment.

    Pros

Terrific pay, friendly people, learned a great deal while on site

    Cons

The family attitude that is present on site can backfire if you share your ideas about changing stagnant processes.

    Advice to Management

The amount of money wasted on site administrators who backed each other up when one would go on break was surprising. There doesn't need to be a full time staff member making over 100k sitting around for 3 weeks twiddling their thumbs and pretending to look busy. Might be an efficiency the company should look into.

I have been working at Downer Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reliable income due to ongoing work in a constantly growing industry. Opportunities to upskill and gain licence endorsements as well as qualifications.

    Cons

The most top heavy company I have ever set foot in Even with the abundance of management there is constant communication breakdowns and organisation in certain departments is appalling. Low wages with extremely slow progression. Health and safety has gone over the top. Laborers are treated as nothing more than a number.

    Advice to Management

Trim the fat in the offices and try treating your workers with more respect and gratitude. Ease up on health and safety. Give skilled workers more acceptable remuneration. And to sound so blunt, try promoting the people who work and and professionally rather than the ones who kiss management's arse.
