    Great people...bad management.

    Interesting business, i.e. designing and building trains!

    ConsI was a Graduate accountant in Downer EDI Rail. It was very difficult to gain further experience as a Graduate accountant either through new roles or senior roles. Management disapproved of my suggestion for job rotation even though HR thought it was a great idea. People less qualified and experienced were brought in to be my manager. It was difficult to see the logic and long term strategic planning of such decisions.

    Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management need to be investigated and cleaned out if not already done so.
    Long term planning needed to keep talented people. Staff turnover was far too high.
    Investigation needed in the people recruited. Questionable or lacking in experience seemed to be favoured.

    Great Place to work

    ProsVery standard organization. No politics and everyone is working as team.
    Very stable organization.

    ConsMust be able to do multitask. Slow movement in salary adjustment yearly. Annual leave fixed and will not increase. Not able to get benefit even your work required it.

    Advice to Senior ManagementShould focus more on staffs benefit and promotion.
    Should give opportunities to staffs

    An overall positive experience, with lots of opportunity to grow and develop new skills

    ProsDowner is a large corporate which provides employees with ample opportunity to network and develop relationships with a wide range of people and skills sets. If you are a self-starter, you can get involved in a range of projects and initiatives, which keeps your role really interesting.
    The organisation is undergoing a lot of change, which means that you need to be flexible and adaptable to fit in, but this also comes with a lot of opportunities.

    ConsSinde the organisation has grown through rapid acquisition, there are still distinct silos within the organisation which can make the operating environment challenging. This coupled with the lack of group-wide systems and technology platforms can mean that your time is spent trying to find information, which is quite frustrating. However, the leaders of the organisation are aware of this and there are a number of initiatives underway to address this.

    Advice to Senior ManagementDon't forget to concentrate on the people side of the business. Staff engagement is directly attributable to the culture of the organisation and it is important to provide not only commercial leadership to the business, but also win the hearts of employees so that they give that discretionary effort. Take time to talk to your people.
