    Pros

Solid company that's known to provide stability to its employees and treat them well. Top quality technology recognized by the vast majority of O&G Clients. Active in developing promising new products. Good career opportunities as-is, with the acquisition by Siemens probably bringing additional ones.

    Cons

The different locations are not in the most sought after US cities. The quality of employees can be disparate. The high achievers will be recognized but may not find the support and tools needed to be higher productive.

    Advice to Management

Training can be improve greatly. Not very strong culture.

    Pros

Great place to learn rotating equipment business. Several people with greater than 20 years experience in the Industry. Work life balance is good.

    Cons

My salary was always a median market salary. Immigration issues were tricky. Career growth is slow for someone from a different industry and working at entry or mid level.

    Pros

Really great people who are always willing to help you and many feel your pain as Management will work your butt off and throw you a ~1% raise while they'll collect double bonuses. In 2008 downturn, while many lost their jobs and were laid off, Management received double/triple bonuses for "cutting costs" IE firing people aka "headcount". Decent pay for the area, but they'll expect 50-60 hours a week from you (min), so you're further ahead taking a less paying job elsewhere and getting a PT job instead. Don't let them know you want to stay in the area either, because then they know they "have you". You'll get training and education reimbursement.

    Cons

Work life balance doesn't exist here, hands down. Management fills their pockets while they throw you a 1% raise (if you're lucky). This company has a mentality of big business circa 1980, meaning: whip you and make you work long hours (they don't care about how efficiently you work, but only focus on quantity). Have literally seen employees surf the net for 5 out of their 10 hour "work" day, but they are the ideal employee because they are there 50+ hours a week. Many managers shouldn't manage - massive micro managing and tons of wasteful meetings = opposite of efficiency. Oh and lots and lots of managers (chiefs), some of which have no one under them to manage but they still make $150k a year plus bonus...I've been looking to get out for a while now, but tough to do when your family is in the area.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and stop hiring from outside the company. (This won't change...but maybe with Siemens owning you). You work your employees like dogs then hire outsiders as managers and directors, rather than promote from within. For one year I counted the number of Org notices regarding Manager/Director hires - >10% of them were current D-R employees. Absolutely no promoting from within the company, no incentive or reward for loyalty. The only reward is: "you should be happy to have a job, grunt!" Those that do come in from outside the company, always stay for 2-3 years and leave...D-R is a stepping stone/climbing the ladder for most and management doesn't get it. True story: they went through 3 or 4 Olean Plant GM's (outsiders who stayed 1-2 years each) before finally going with the internal candidate who had spent his entire 20+ year career with D-R and KNOWS the business and brilliant guy. Amazing. For always focused on cutting costs, you sure pay TONS for headhunting, sign-on bonuses, and relocation fees... Such a backwards organization.

    Pros

Programs for personal development are often reimbursed Compensation seems fair for the location of the factories (Mostly Western NY)

    Cons

Slow to innovate Pushy management Production is rushed to meet invoice goals, but quality suffers and warranty costs can be massive as a result

    Advice to Management

Transparency in goals and defining the path forward is vital to employee engagement. I never felt as if I was working to accomplish anything exceptional; it was simply "growth" and "profits".

    Cons

Nothing too detrimental! Every company has its cons but I found the cons in Dresser-Rand acceptable and not a big issue.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

The company has great benefits and most the people are a pleasure to work with. If you have a question with anything, almost everyone is willing to take time out of their day to explain. You will never be bored at D-R because there is always more work to be done.

    Cons

There is no work / life balance. With my position, I constantly had to be working outside of normal business hours. I dreaded taking any type of vacation because the amount of stress of coming back. If you are decent at your job, you will be absolutely overloaded with work. D-R has a tendency of taking complete advantage of good workers. Everyone basically gets the same yearly raise, so there is no benefit in working the extra hours. This has made a company that punishes you for being a good worker. Also the training at D-R is absolutely horrible. If you get a job, prepare to train yourself.

    Advice to Management

Reward your employees more often. Help make D-R a place where people enjoy coming into work.

    Cons

To many middle managers. Before I left the company was more focused on quarterly numbers than a long term plan.

Clean house with middle management and good luck with the Siemens transition
