Overall Great Company To Work For!

Senior Software Developer (Current Employee) Johnston, IA

ProsAwesome benefits like cheap health insurance and 6% matching 401k contribution in addition to a 3% automatic contribution, so you can put in 6% of your salary and the company contributes 9%. The 3% automatic contribution just started last year to replace half of their traditional pension plan benefits.

ConsThere are good managers and bad managers. If you have a good manager your life is great, if you have a bad manager you job isn't so enjoyable.

Growing company going in the right direction

OUTSIDE SALES (Current Employee) Mankato, MN

ProsThis compnay is making great steps to deliver the best products to the customer. There is a lot of integrity within the company and they are very proud of what they do. You can't do everything right 100% of the time but they try harder than anyone out there. And they deliver great products and services.

ConsThere is a tendancey to be too many levels of management. The company is great and I love how they have the sales force as independent contractors. However; in order to get changes through within a compnay of this magnitude you end up jumping through hoops- typical in business of this size.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it simple- Right Product, Right Acre. Don't over do the extra services as great as they can be. Keep focusing on the best products, training sales force, and backing up with agronomy knowledge.

    Company Review

    Manager (Current Employee) Bloomington, IL

ProsFocused upon employee safety; Opportunity to advance; pay for performance; high ethical standards; solid financially and investing well for the future

ConsIt can be hard to advance very much without moving and it can be hard to get the highest performance rating if you state that you are not willing to move. DuPont has a high percentage of people set to retire in 5 years and the pressure to move people and train them more broadly is evident.

Advice to Senior Managementdon't get so focused on promoting people that are willing to move that you become like Am-Cy in the 90s.

ConsPeak Seasons - Large # of hours
Communication break downs during peak season
    Weather wasn't always great
    Long term planning wasn't great
    Short notice given for travel

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more appreciative of the work done by seasonal employees. Help those who express desire to advance their career.

Fun, but a low number of hours as a summer feild researcher resulted in small paychecks

Summer Research Field Worker (Former Employee) Johnston, IA

ProsI worked in the field as a research worker in the summer. The staff is friendly. They make sure you are healthy, safe and comfortable during working hours. Training is quick and most tasks are simple.

ConsI worked in the field as a research worker in the summer. Although the hourly pay is very good, work days were extremely short, and it makes it hard to make a decent amount of money.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow field research workers to have more hours.

Work at Pioneer if your near retirement.....

    Engineer (Former Employee) Johnston, IA

    ProsGood benefits, and nice hours.

ConsBasicallly, this company is coasting off of two facts:
There were people 50 years ago that developed a lot of momentum which they are still riding on today (they developed some good germplasms), and
Its hard for competitors to break into the seed business given the need for a strong base germplasm, wide research organization, logistics chain, sales force, capital inivestment, etc.

The profit margins are high in the seed business and it covers up an egregious ineptitude in leadership, which trickles down into the employees that work there and are hired there. Giving the leadership basic skills tests in the areas that they are responsible for (and basic knowledge/skills tests of what it takes to be a good leader) would quickly show how little they know about what they are doing.

    ProsCompetitive Salary
    Very Good Benefits
    Friendly Employees
    Minimal Stress Working Environment
    Organized Work Area
    Networking
    User-Friendly Computer Programs
    Vacation Days

    ConsPeak Seasons=Many Hours At Times
    Limited Travel
    Many Tedious Tasks/Assignments
Weather Conditions May Not Always Be Desireable
    Difficult To Gain Numerous Promotions

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more appreciative of all the hard work and tasks completed by workers that go unnoticed. It is also a plus to know how a majority of the tasks being carried out by those who report to you are completed. Show some more emotion and initiative!

Mixed bag of good and bad experiences at Hayward Controlled Environments

Greenhouse Technician (Former Employee) Hayward, CA

ProsVery friendly and welcoming environment, weekly presentations, monthly potluck with exceptional bbq experts, mostly exceptional management and research team at the Hayward Facility.

Consthe manager/"senior researcher" in Hayward Controlled environments (CE), lack of documented protocols in CE, lack of upward mobility at the Hayward facility.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpending 10 of millions on new greenhouses in Iowa shouldn't affect the hundreds of thousands spent on qualified workers in California. Facilities don't make great discoveries, minds do.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
