I have been working at Duane Morris part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I very much doubt that this firm will ever go belly up, they count every penny. And they do still have some cool yet useful perks like flying every lawyer (not just partner) into a firm meeting once a year--and every other year it is in Boca.

    Cons

This place pretends that everything is done by consensus. I guess that is true if what you mean is that management makes the calls and then announces them and then asks for the rest of the partners to sign off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-think management in offices outside pf Philly, many of them are just wasting away.

    Pros

Great cafeteria, good hours. Colleagues were very nice people and welcoming to others. Work load was sometimes hectic, but that is to be expected.

    Cons

Culture of the firm. Communication and transparency. There were some cliques and there was preference given to some more than others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Duane Morris full-time

    Pros

Awesome vacation benefits (4 weeks); big firm feel; free perks and events (Phillies/Flyers tickets, zoo night, etc.)

    Cons

Compensation for staff; limited growth opportunities, if any; poor business organization; staff can sometimes be treated poorly by attorneys; law firms change very slowly!; Some people have been there for decades and can be complacent

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better incentives to retain good talent because there aren't many ways to stay at DM and develop a career. Be open to new ideas to progress the firm into the future.

Nothing really special about working here

I worked at Duane Morris full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working here are the people.

    Cons

Benefits are expensive; the so-called collegial culture isn't exactly accurate; attorneys are the revenue drivers and therefore are regarded as more important than the admin staff; no tuition reimbursement

I worked at Duane Morris as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone is helpful and intelligent. I worked across multiple departments, with people who were passionate about the firm's branding and marketing materials.

    Cons

I was only employed for a 6 month internship. I wasn't able to fully grow within the company because I was still in college.

I worked at Duane Morris as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great boss who mentored me immensely, allowing me, as an intern, access to engage with different streams in the company. Very fast paced environment that fosters corporate stamina.

    Cons

It seemed that it takes a long time to climb up in responsibility, and that could easily be the nature of a corporate beast. But there appeared to be turf wars, which could also impact professional development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Develop and retain young talent.

    Houston Office

Former Employee - Legal Assistant in Houston, TX

I worked at Duane Morris full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Duane Morris was competitive with other firms regarding salary and benefits.

    Cons

The Houston office of Duane Morris is in dire need of an effective staff human resource leader. The current "office manager" is ineffective and was assigned this position based merely on the fact that she was the secretary for the managing partner in the Houston office. She has not familiarized herself with the daily job requirements of the staff she manages and therefore is unable to make intelligent decisions regarding work load distribution.

Further, there is a disconnect between most attorneys and staff in the Houston office. These attorneys I speak of do not even make the effort to greet staff members when they pass them in the hall or walk by the staff member's desk. Common courtesies are often ignored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire someone with people skills and human resource education for the role of office manager. This person should be the liaison between attorneys and staff, which is not the case in the Houston office. Consequently, there is an extremely high turnover rate of staff members; e.g., I was the fourth legal assistant (secretary) in a one-year time period for a particular attorney. I expressed my concerns to the HR in Philadelphia, but nobody followed up as far as I know.
