Current Employee - Community Management Intern in New York, NY

I have been working at Duane Reade

    Pros

As the community management internship program is relatively new to Duane Reade (instated two years ago), your ability as an intern to run with ideas in whichever and whatever direction you'd like is limitless. The internship is totally what you make of it. With friendly store staff and superbly supportive management (which varies per district), the opportunity to learn the basics of the retail world is in the palm of your hands... What you put into this internship is what you'll get out of it.

    Cons

With every new company program, there come some kinks. Many of the stores weren't aware that DR has interns so when it came time to go on store visits or interview store managers/employees, a lot of the staff was blind-sighted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'd like to see a more engaging and professional atmosphere on the store-level; which could possibly be cultivated by small, community-based mixers or anonymous employee evaluations of store management. Also, there are some knots to be kneaded out with the integration of Walgreen's policies into Duane Reade's culture.

I have been working at Duane Reade full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The 15% discount you now get for this year. The extra check you get if you're full time employee every year. The friendly staff in your current store. If you work at a 24 hour store you can make up your hours so you won't end up a bad check.

    Cons

Store Manager in my store sometime know what he/she is doing. The lunch time in my store is half hour which is crazy. I wish the discount was at least 25% or 50% which will be better for us.

    Pros

    -Flexible schedule
-Paid time for holidays, personal, sick days
-Opportunity for promotions if proper work ethic is shown
    -Dental, Vision and Prescription coverage

    Cons

    -Excessive workload
-High turnover rate, due to lack of management's people skills
    -Low pay, but it's retail
-Lack of training seminars for management
-Too many responsibilities added making you do assistant manager's work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work life balance is there due to flexible schedule. Management is careless shows no concern, and plays favorites

I have been working at Duane Reade part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not too many pros. I for one got lucky to have a great pharmacist manager and great co workers. Other than that the union benefits are ok. From vacation to separate sick days and personal days.thats about it. District managers are ok they try their best. Store managers are ok nothing special. Pharmacist do their jobs the best they can with all the work they have to do.

    Cons

No promotions. The company is somewhat in a bind where there isnt much growh happening. Stores are closing, people are losing jobs. Certification doesnt help much now, you would really have to devote alot of time and emails to get your pay raise due to your certification. But thats probably due to the lack of money going around. As a tech in this company hard work can very easily get overlooked unless you know the right people or be in the right store.
