It's an alright company, but from what I've heard it depends where you work.

I worked at Duane Reade part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Part-timers get benefits such as vacation, personal and paid time-off after 90 days.
    - Staff is great to work with, but it really depends on the area.
    - Flexible scheduling
    - Great place to work if you're a college student with no experience.

    Cons

    - Expensive prices compared to competitors.
    - Ill-equipped tools. I had to deal with a wobbly ladder that management did not buy.
    - Help desk for photo labs took way too long, making customers wait if the photos don't look right.
    - Long hours and it takes forever for supplies to come such as paper towels and floor cleaning solutions, as well as garbage bags and shopping bags.
    - Union dues are expensive. $13 per paycheck, and I don't think there's an option to opt. out, even if it means losing benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees once in awhile regarding supplies and unsafe equipment.

I have been working at Duane Reade part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not too many pros. I for one got lucky to have a great pharmacist manager and great co workers. Other than that the union benefits are ok. From vacation to separate sick days and personal days.thats about it. District managers are ok they try their best. Store managers are ok nothing special. Pharmacist do their jobs the best they can with all the work they have to do.

    Cons

No promotions. The company is somewhat in a bind where there isnt much growh happening. Stores are closing, people are losing jobs. Certification doesnt help much now, you would really have to devote alot of time and emails to get your pay raise due to your certification. But thats probably due to the lack of money going around. As a tech in this company hard work can very easily get overlooked unless you know the right people or be in the right store.

    Pros

Pharmacists are great and very educated and respectful

    Cons

    Low pay. management sucks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have some respect and do your work properly rather than showing attitude to your Pharmacy techs and Pharmacists

  11.

Current Employee - Service Clerk in New York, NY

I have been working at Duane Reade full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I developed a new way to deal with painfully difficult customers, it gave "therapy" to my hand's tendons and ligaments to lift up heavy toats of merchandise for most of the day. Coworkers are nice and respectful for the most part.

    Cons

Store management is rude, inhumane, inconsiderate, abusive, and also disrespectful of certain cultural habits brought from abroad, and all this goes down to some middle managers and "shift leads". Store manager expects from you to get done three tasks at three different places at the same time. Registers line is ALWAYS understaffed, so if you are a stocking person and not a cashier they have you ring up customers for 80% of your shift and still expect you to get all your work done, not to mention special tasks like seasonal stocking, taking passport photos, general cleaning and of customer-made messes, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would have to advice to the mother company's stock share holders, Walgreen's, themselves:

Stop going all for the money or your company will be always regarded as one of the worst places to work at.
