I have been working at Duane Reade part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible schedule
The employees are fun to work with most of the time
Good place to start if you have no experience in the work force
    Being taught good work skills

    Cons

    Minimum Wage
Doing the manager's or shift leaders work and be expected to finish it no matter what
    A short break
    Annoying customers
Bi-Weekly Pay (Getting paid every 2 weeks)
    No full-time unless you're a shift leader
Stores that aren't 24 hour stores would depend on only TWO people to close an entire store with ONE shift leader.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I really wish they would raise the wage out from the bare minimum and also wish that they would hire more people for late shifts.

I have been working at Duane Reade part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule and hours. Good job to help support school or Career

    Cons

minimum wage for entry level customer service. Workload out ways pay most days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give workers more incentive and opportunities to advance.

  8.

Culture on a rapid, steep decline. Poor work-life balance.

I have been working at Duane Reade full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits somewhat offset very average pay.

You are likely to have some dedicated, wonderful co-workers.

    Cons

There's a low, glass ceiling on diversity at Duane Reade:

if you're a minority (gender, race, etc), you'll find you're in the majority at store level, yet the upper levels (district and above) are almost exclusively white males.

Poor work-life balance for salaried employees.

DR 's upper management pays lip service to the company's cultural values but behaves however they want.

It's become very much a "just do what we tell you" environment.

If you don't drink the current flavor of Kool-Aid, expect to be punished for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job of sniffing out the lip-service practitioners.

Clean house in the DR upper ranks here, if you want to truly instill the kind of culture you talk about.

I worked at Duane Reade part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This company will give you a chance to work for them, with very little experience, e.g., cashiering, stock-clerk positions, etc...

    Cons

The human resources department is very biased. They only defend management when an employee related issue arises. Many of the managers are corrupt and they belittle the employees. The pay is not equal to the work that is produced for them. Run for you life, if you can.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please treat employees as human beings and investigate a situation when an employee reports a problem. Do not assume that the employee is automatically at fault.

I have been working at Duane Reade full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Some of the staff is really fun and engaging, and willing to teach you what you need to know

    Cons

Absolutely no communication between management. There is a constant lack of resources to keep the store running, and there is harassment from both customers and fellow employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to party afternoon to the needs of the store, customers, and employees
