I worked at Duane Reade full-time

    Pros

-extensive (and paid) training -hired for a specific store by that store's manager, helping to grow better relationship with boss -great co-workers who helped to teach the ropes and give a lay of the land

    Cons

-very rude customers and some got violent during overnight hours -sometimes made to unpack boxes and stock shelves in the back, which was not a part of the original job description -store manager was not out handling day-to-day runnings of the store and the floor managers were very young and disrespectful; seemed to take abuse their positions

    Advice to Management

Maybe hire more security for overnight hours to ensure that intoxicated or belligerent customers are not able to attack employees and pay more attention to the floor and assistant managers as they often slacked off and made the employees lower down pick up their slack.

I worked at Duane Reade (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a relatively calm atmosphere, the number of customers never reaches a huge amount like in a movie theater so it's usually kind of quiet and calm.

    Cons

The main con I experienced working there was that more than half of the lockers in the locker room were broken and unusable and kind of gave the locker room a dilapidated feeling.

    Advice to Management

I think they should have found a way to get a little more improvements in the locker rooms and employee bathrooms.

    Pros

My coworkers are awesome, and the cool regular customers. My store manager is strict but fair and pretty understanding.

    Cons

Stressful, low pay, a lot of pressure

    Advice to Management

Don't have your employees work JUST UNDER full time hours to avoid paying for benefits. Duane Reade is unionized but the union really sucks. Employees should be paid more when they learn/do more. I order merchandise, I handle all of the stores damages, I do everything in photo on my shift (I taught myself because even management didn't know how to print photo books and posters) and I still make 9.00 an hour. The same as the new girl who only does cashiering. There is no positive feedback and no reason to stay. They don't value the employee at all.

    Cons
