    Captivating, Yet Dry, Work

    Software Developer (Former Employee)
    Joplin, MO

ProsI had a high level of autonomy in how I approached projects. Manager was just the best. Relaxed atmosphere. Very intelligent co-workers who were mostly electrical engineers. Worked with the latest versions of Developer Express and AutoCAD and used them on a very fast workstation.

ConsIT locked down the machines, hindering my abilities to install software to get my work done. Very industrial and antiquated offices.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide new hires with a guide of what to study in order to start deeloping for the systems.

Reasonable pay, decent benefits, lots of overtime. Typical manufacturing.

    CNC Operator (Current Employee)
    Parsons, KS

ProsOverall a good environment with good people. The shop has good, though old equipment. Production runs smoothly most of the time. Company supplies all tools so the cost of employment is very small. Reasonably relaxed environment.

ConsWhen they say "some overtime" they mean don't plan on ever having just 40 hrs (or really even 50)
Still working to implement Six Sigma and often seems like there is little interest in doing it correctly.

Advice to Senior ManagementConnect expectations with the metrics, don't just make pretty pictures and fancy speeches.

Only if you get one job offer, otherwise, do not go there

    Senior Process Engineer (Former Employee)
    Carson, CA

ProsCan meet a lot of troubles if you regard it challenge
    Learn all kinds of mistakes
Good place to learn Murphy law

ConsLet go of the capable employees
Low spirit of teamwork, no accountability
Too many VPs, do little good works to contribute
Not much career advancement, but would say so to lure you in

Advice to Senior ManagementBack to basics, less politics, treat people nice, and reward the real contributors, it can generate real productivity.

    Workload Overload

    Contracts Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Joplin, MO

ProsCo-workers are family. PTO is above standard for this area.

ConsVery little accountability - if issues are addressed, it's done as a group and not with the individual. Handful of employees are relied upon for high output while quite a few employees have very low output. Compensation for high output and low output employees are the same.

Micro-Managed - Very little input or communication from Management until issue arises or deadline is near.

Work Load - Company stance is to cut back staff and force remaining staff to work longer hours. 12 hr days are not uncommon and 16 are not unheard of. They have no problem with employees bring their children in so the employee may continue to work. Expectations of work loads are unreasonable.

PTO - You have Paid Time Off but have a difficult time being able to actually take it. They strongly stress what an inopportune time it is take time off...everytime you take off.

Job Expectations - Are poorly/loosely defined. They change regulary depending on which department/person is currently not meeting their responsibilities. The Contracts Department in general seems to be the dumping ground for work that is deemed beneath other departments. With the addtional work load comes no relief from prior duties.

Company Policy - Is applied inconsistently depending on the department and manager. There is no formal complaint system for/to HR. Emails and phone calls go unanswered and issues go unaddressed. Issues of workplace harrassement/bullying are common.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Ducommun Way needs to be more than just a catch phrase. Stop preaching it and practice it.

If you ABSOLUTELY need a job and have no other options then work here

    Corporate Employee (Current Employee)
    Carson, CA

    ProsSome good people at company

Cons- Upper management hides behind controlled access doors that only they can open. Other corporate employees do not have access to their "special" area of the facility.

    - There is no formal system in place to voice complaints to Human Resources department.

    - The following are specific to my department:

           - Asking a question to a co-worker is not allowed, if you have a question about anything you must ask the manager directly.

           - Using the restroom is frowned upon and raises the suspicion of the department head.

           - It is strongly encouraged and implied that you can eat lunch at your desk..... hint hint

           - Taking a quick break to grab a coffee with your co-worker is unacceptable to dept head

           - Having a quick conversation with your co-worker about how their day is going is frowned upon

           - Taking PTO during the holiday season is not allowed

           - The workload is unrealistic and it is expected that you will stay in until 7PM every day.

Advice to Senior ManagementA ton of money was spent on the "Ducommun Way" but if upper management came out of their controlled access ivory tower and took a look around they would see that some departments are light years away from making the "Ducommun Way" a reality.

In my department specifically the workload needs to be managed better. It reflects poorly on management when they are unable to manage work/expectations given their limited resources.

Something is seriously wrong when we say there's a ton of problems out there and when it's time to go home the only car left in the parking lot is mine.

A rollercoaster of ups and downs

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsCan be lots of fun - you get to do a little (or a lot) of everything, not just the typical stuff in your job title; engineering, quality, ops, manufacturing, program management. You do it all!

ConsThere is no accountability so a lot of people do nothing while only 3 or 4 people carry the burden for everyone in the group and then those are also the people who get the negative press when things go wrong.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed more managers who have a stronger knowledge and background in what they're supposed to be managing. Especially need more managers with a stronger technical background.

People are friendly and supportive. Planning is a bit substandard.

    Test Engineer (Current Employee)
    Carson, CA

ProsPeople are friendly. Managers manage- they do the project schedule, and let the engineers engineer. There are no barriers between departments- production, engineering, and sales. Ducommun is working to develop new products now.

ConsPeople work a lot of hours- esp. engineers. Many of the products are showing their age. Organization and planning could be improved. They are closing a site and bringing the workers to another site- which is out of phone lines.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore planning for infrastructure. Need to train more production people - almost the whole production staff has more than 25 years of service, and a large proportion is nearing retirement. Some of the production equipment needs to be brought up to date.
