Great place to work

Distribution Dispatcher (Current Employee)
Tampa, FL

I have been working at Duke Energy full-time for less than a year

ProsDuke really seems to invest in their employees. There are many programs available, including tuition reimbursement. If you are motivated, the company genuinely appears to be willing to help you upgrade yourself and your career.

ConsSome of the more senior employees are not very receptive to Duke wanting to advance both the company and it's employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a position to assist employees that want to upgrade themselves find applicable programs that would best suit their career goals.

I have been working at Duke Energy full-time for more than a year

ProsStable jobs with good benefits. Not great but good and stable.

ConsThe company is so large you can get lost in the mix. Almost feels like working in a government job. You feel like your opinion will never matter.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your people first, plant & equipment second.

Duke Energy is a great company to work for and has a strong reputation.

Supply Chain (Current Employee)

I have been working at Duke Energy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsOpportunities for leadership outside of day-to-day work are numerous and opportunties for advancement in such a large company are numerous. If you choose to take advantage of these programs, senior management will notice.

ConsBenefit package (healthcare) is not competitive.

Stable work but poor management and lower than average salary.

Project Manager (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I have been working at Duke Energy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI have worked for Duke Energy for 35 years, so I am paid a good salary..at least for this area. The benefits are average. Since I have been here so long, I get 6 weeks vacation. That's a great benefit...if I actually get to use it.

ConsCompared to other utilities, Duke is well known to be one of the lowest paying utility companies, especially in Nuclear. Compared to other companies, Duke's health care costs are high. Management, at least Nuclear, is not supportive or even respect employees. They often say one thing and do another. They have personally lied to me several times. They point fingers and blame employees but when asked for details they cannot provide facts to support blaming individuals. Expectations for themselves is lower than what they expect of individual workers. Duke expects you to wear a beeper 24/7 and be available for call out and come to work within 75 minutes but there is no compensation for this. They do not respect work/life balance. More and more they expect doing more work with fewer people. They expect workers to just absorb work when people leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should respect and support individual contributors. Management needs to walk the talk.

Strong US Domestic Utility. weak on management of its international portfolio

Senior Vice President (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Duke Energy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsLarge US utility with lots of job opportunities in the US

ConsA Utility with significant activity, but not strong on entrepreneurial side. Lacks diversity of thinking at the senior management level.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnfortunately, Duke has approached diversity by finding as many women as possible to put in to management. Not all of them come with sufficient experience or training in their areas of responsibility. Disservice to the individual, subordinates and shareholders. Should of looked for experienced people with diverse backgrounds. Duke is a stodgey utility.

Call center horrible

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I worked at Duke Energy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood benefits. I think if you work outside of the call center. It is a great company to grow with.

ConsPay rate for call center horrible. First year raise every 3 mts but don't get to excited only 3 cents. Don't expect to move up from call center. If you have high scores they don't want you off the phones.
