I have been working at Duke University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working at Duke has a lot of benefits - there are so many resources they offer employees in the form of educational, library, training, and health care improvement programs. They care about their employees' quality of life!

    Cons

    Parking is expensive at Duke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More parking spots please.

I have been working at Duke University full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great learning environment for getting accustomed to office work, flexible hours, good pay and great health insurance, perks of working at a college campus like library access and free movies.

    Cons

Duke is weirdly inflexible about certain things, like making you pay for parking and use vacation hours if the office closes due to weather.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a university, I think the direction is fine. Management advice would have to be specific to individual offices.

All in all a good experience during the first three years. Management changes after that hurt the team.

I have been working at Duke University

    Pros

Benefits are really good and working on a campus was a plus. The environment was clean, easy to maneuver in and safe.

    Cons

The pay rate could have been better. Management spends too much time covering themselves, blaming the staff for anything and everything. Praise for a good job goes a long way. Long term, talented people that are dedicated were not appreciated as much as short term employees going through the motions. A shame that management changed, it used to be a great place to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to what people are actually doing and recognize who your best people are. Give those people your trust and support.

  10. Great place to work

I have been working at Duke University

    Pros

Top notch talent among coworkers. Fair (very fair) compensation. Snazzy offices and computers, as well as a cluster to use for computing.

    Cons

None to speak of. They might give away your office, I guess? But then you'll get a new one that's comparable in quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More math courses would be good. Don't switch offices on people without saying so. I don't know, I wouldn't put anything here but there's a 20 word minimum.

Former Employee - Professional, Administrative in Durham, NC

I worked at Duke University (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Duke offers terrific job security, intelligent colleagues, wonderful learning opportunities, and a beautiful location. Employees also have access to good healthcare, great retirement benefits, and good tuition benefits.

    Cons

Rigid, hierarchical, and old-fashioned structure that is not open to advancement. Tenured faculty feel less valued than physicians; housekeeping is at the very bottom of the chain. Nonetheless, there are departments where this standard is challenged and all are valued according to their contributions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take staff development seriously. For many, Duke is well regarded because it is exceedingly rare that anyone is fired for sloth or incompetence. For others, job security is insufficient for a satisfactory level of workplace satisfaction.
