I have been working at Duke University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, friendly professors (mostly), friendly young researchers.

    Cons

Econ building is pretty bad, all the other are good though.

    Advice to Management

Invest in better classrooms, seriously, this is one of the wealthiest universities in the USA and you still have classrooms that are worst than other way smaller universities.

    Pros

Duke University is a excellent place to work, they are professional, friendly, and very helpful.

    Cons

The only downside for me when I was working at Duke, it was the distance I had to travel, other wise I would still be there going on 16 years.

    Pros

Prestige, world renowned research, great patients, the newer parts of the medical campus are beautiful, excellent retirement account employer contribution for salaried employees

    Cons

I worked in two different departments at Duke and never had a decent mid-level manager. They all seem to come from decent workers who never learned what management means.

    Advice to Management

Improve flexibility in work schedules, give better leadership and management training to mid level managers, create more clear career ladders

  6. Great place to work and research

I worked at Duke University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You have the chance to work along steamed scientist. Provides a balanced work - life combination especially if you are in research. Health insurance is also good.

    Cons

High stress if you are in training in clinical fields. Some research labs look old and not equipped with top notch technology, although it is improving pretty quickly.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the hard work and plan to bring in new medical devices in the research labs. Improvements in the workplace has been very nice though.

The hourly wage is not high comparing with other academia institution

    Pros

Duke has a really great infrastructure in place. Between the research facilities and the hospital you can almost always find someone willing to share insight.

    Cons

Your individual experience naturally depends on the department and the group for which you work. Some facilities are better equipped and better maintained than others, but overall it was above average.

    Advice to Management

Doesn't really apply as this is a University, but in my department I appreciated the opportunities to continue my education outside the laboratory and I would recommend to continue encouraging those aspects.

    Pros

World class facilities, faculty, colleagues, and an active and stimulating academic environment.

    Cons

Postdocs that receive their own fellowships and funding become "non-compensated" employees and lose access to certain benefits and perks.

    Pros

Duke is a great place to work as a student. There are numerous valuable employment opportunities in campus, and you get to learn a lot.

    Cons

The only issue I can think of is that some jobs require you to have work study, but even if you don't there are plenty of jobs that you can get as a student.

    Advice to Management

You've done a great job of making sure that there are student jobs on campus which is awesome! also appreciate that it's easy to get onto payroll and switch jobs on campus.
