Advice to Senior Management

Pros
lots of leave for personl life
Cons
no growth and no bonus. pay hike very low
Advice to Senior Management
please give promotions
Pros
Duke Med Center has no shortage of competent, mindful self-starters. Some have worked there for 20 years or more and are fiercely loyal (not just to the basketball team).
Cons
Managers could use more leadership training - and a warmer 'bedside manner' - when it comes to leading by example, building credibility, communicating important decisions and giving real-time, relevant feedback. I saw frustration and tears from staff at all ladder rungs. High pressure environment for the doctors, nurses and technicians that impacts the office workers (business managers, account managers, admins, marketing teams).
Advice to Senior Management
Play nice. People are drawing their last breaths next to the offices you work in - business decisions are important, but MD ego-plays and squabbles are taxing for everyone involved.
Pros
Duke paid close attention to employees who went above and beyond, and I was impressed both with departmental managers and senior administrators. The competence was amazing, and the commitment to good patient care was paramount.
Cons
Competition among staff occasionally made Duke a frustrating place to work. There is an active "white coat" culture, but policies are being put in place system-wide to increase collegiality.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to implement policies making care ever more patient and family centered, and clarify the value of patient support services.
Pros
The finance infrastructure is top notch with lots of exciting projects. Staff is smart and generally motivated.
Cons
Management can treat staff like they are expendable ... there are lots more analysts out there who want that job ...
Advice to Senior Management
treat employees with respect and value their contribution
Pros
Duke has a group of extremely talented researchers. The DUHS fosters an environment which encourages researchers to work together in multidisciplinary projects.
Cons
Some of the lowest medical pay in the area - which is common for top tier medical schools (the better the school - lower the pay). They are constantly making and breaking promises, even those in writing in an offer letter!
Advice to Senior Management
Keep your promises to the people you hire. Create an environment where being "mentored" truly means having a good interaction with a mentor interesting in helping you succeed.
Pros
Great Benefits, Paid time off, Friendly staff.
Cons
Being a housekeeper here is often not respected, by the so called higher paid employees at DUHS. The cleaning can sometimes be a dirty and hard job but the benefits, and the pay covers that. Parking is ridiculously
Advice to Senior Management
Have more appreciation toward the EVS staff
Pros
The name is the best pro of all.
Meeting new people
Training
Cons
Not family friendly
Pay is not competitive with other industries
Management like to look over your shoulder
Advice to Senior Management
Appreciate your employees more. You have a child care facility that does not have space for the employees. Just because an employee is not a MD does not mean they are not valuable.
Pros
Great benefits. A lot of opportunities to move around if you can survive.
Cons
Unfair business practices. They work to promote a feeling of paranoia & the only way to advance is not on the merits of what you do but who you can attack.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop attacking employees if they are good at what they do. Stop rewarding people for being sneaky and attacking others.
Pros
there are great health benefits
Cons
this has been a very political environment. duke just wants to make money and they don't particularly care how they do it. i leave most meetings thinking that management is incompetent. no one seems to have the answer to any questions.
Advice to Senior Management
i would recommend firing yourself
