Pros
- Management cares about your well-being and your work/life balance
- Wonderful benefits that support you and the family (vacation, dental, health, gym)
- Comfortable working environment, not being micro-managed
- private office
- Tuition reimbursement after 3 years
- Reimbursement for your kids' tuition!!!!
- reputable employer
Cons
- Salaries aren't even close to competitive, but there are some benefits you may be able to take advantage of
- understaffed and unsupported work environment with no hope to change, i'm doing a job for two people and getting paid for 1/2 of what one should be paid
- little flexibility to work from home
Pros
Challenging and exciting research, top notch science
Cons
Slow...extremely slow to publish....and preference for solid journals, but not Nature or Science that get you academic jobs
Advice to Senior Management
Think about the career prospects of postdocs and research associates please. They are not here just to make you rich and famous.
Pros
Lots of talented people and you really can see your work improving patient healthcare
Cons
No career development for technical people
Pros
good name recognition that can launch your career elsewhere in the country or the world; overall very good benefits; friendly work atmosphere; peer support is good
Cons
a high pressure working environment; tough competition to move forward; sometimes getting help from others or other departments is very difficult.
Pros
Great benefits, access to large knowledge-base and networking, intellectually stimulating
Cons
Low salary, difficult to advance
Advice to Senior Management
Overall, management is decent, but this can vary widely depending on whether you are in the hospital or someone's lab. I am a research group (lab) employee, and I have had my share of different managers. The PI I work for is indifferent, but has others do the "people management." Loved my first manager, she afforded me a lot of independence and variety. The second one did not take to me as much, and she took all of my independence and put me on a strict and strenuous schedule. To be fair, she did teach me some things I asked to learn. Overall, the managers are competent but some play favorites and talk you down to upper management.
Pros
The best reason to work for Duke is the benefits
Cons
You have to come in to work on bad weather days, and if you do not show up you still get unschedules and tardies even if its twelve feet of snow outside.
Advice to Senior Management
Network
Pros
Great co-workers and support from them
Cons
Glass ceiling that makes it impossible to make a decent living without changing jobs every few years
Advice to Senior Management
Remove the ceiling
Pros
flexible schedule, PTO sharing for emergencies, good health benefits, interesting work, team work between departments, several proceedures done no where else in the world
Cons
parking expensive, superiority attitude w/in upper mgmt and lab mgmt that because Duke is who they are - if you do not like it - there are 10 more to fill your place - whether true or not.
Mgmt supports mgmt - not the workers
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to your employees - before their workplace self destructs
Pros
My supervisor is supper nice. The working environment is family friendly.
Cons
Parking is not convenience for new employee.
Pros
The life is relatively easy as a research analyst, not stressful.
Cons
hope there are more challenges.
Advice to Senior Management
Hope there are more trainings for analyst.
